Michael L. Johnson Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1947 - 2013

Michael L. JohnsonMichael Lloyd Johnson, age 65, of Langston, passed away peacefully at Lacks Cancer Center on the evening of January 2, 2013. He was surrounded with his family's love as he went to be with his Lord and Savior. Michael was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 3, 1947 to the late Lloyd and Theressa (Holwerda) Johnson. Michael will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Phyllis Johnson; his children, Christina (Robert) Francis and Michael (Sarah) Johnson; his grandchildren: Jessica Henke, Jenny Henke, Travis Francis, Noah Johnson, and Ava Johnson; his sisters and their spouses: Dixie and James McFarland, Phyllis and Jack Piccard, Llona and Earl Davis, and Diane and Dick Russell; brother-in law, Dave Danielson; father and mother-in-law, Marvin and Doris Cannon; sister and brother-in-law, Tim and Jeanne Barrett; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bill and Carol Reed and Terry and Marilyn Lueder. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Theressa Johnson; and his sister, Karen Danielson. Michael grew up in Grand Rapids with his five siblings and started working at the young age of nine shining shoes to help put food on the table. At age 17, he was drafted by the United States Army to serve in Vietnam. On November 28, 1975, Michael married Phyllis Elaine Cannon of Stanton, Michigan. During their 37 years of marriage, they spent many summers together up to Hardy Dam, numerous casino trips, daily diner breakfasts, and golfing outings. Michael retired from Extruded Metals five years ago after 30 years of service. Michael has made his grandchildren priority number one. He has enjoyed being there to accept them and listen to what was on their minds. He built many memories with them as he went hunting with his boys and talking with his girls. Grandpa was sure to share his love of Elvis songs, Classic Cokes, Western Movies, the Tigers, and a good laugh. Michael spent his life loving others, caring for his lawn and home, and trying to win it big with the lottery. He had an elaborate system of numbers he loved to play. Although his jackpot didnt come in monetary means, his winnings were his daily interactions with his loved ones and friends. Michael's compassionate nature and good-humored spirits brought great joy to others and left him with an abundance of people who will deeply miss him. A memorial service in celebration of Michael's life will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, with visitation from 1:00 to 3:00 PM prior to the service. The Rev. Connie Bongard will serve as officiant. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge- Peter M. Wege Guest House (129 Jefferson Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503).

Hello, My brother Bob Cebelak and sister Sandy and I were planning on attending today, but Bob has had the flu for 3 weeks and is on a second round of anti-biotics and not feeling well at all. We have many memories of Mike. I am a little younger than the guys, but my memory of Mike is that he was always smiling and laughing. That's a good memory to have of someone. Bob said to tell you that one of his memories is that Mike and him were together when Pres. Kennedy got shot and also his brother, Robert. They talked about that quite often. He said that Mike, my brother Doug, Bob and Butch Bieliecki always hung around together. Unfortunately now Bob is the only one left. It's sad. Take comfort in knowing that Bob said Mike was a really great guy and they had so many wonderful, fun times together when they were young. He was one of a kind. Also, my parents really cared for Mike. They thought he was a very nice young man. Hope they meet up together in heaven. Take care, Linda
