My condolences goes to the children and grandchildren of Mr. Tobey! Though I never had him as an English teacher, many of my friends did and I know the positive influence he was in so many different ways to each one of them. I was fortunate enough to have him teach me the way of the roads as my Drivers Ed teacher. Many hours were spent driving around as you napped peacefully in the passengers seat! Now may you rest peacefully above as well.

Dan Tobey was my 7th grade English teacher. His passion and booming baritone are part of the reason I majored in English, became a teacher, and love poetry today. I'll have his voice in my head reading "The Raven", "There Is No Frigate Like A Book", "Casey At The Bat", and "The Cremation of Sam McGee" for the rest of my life.
My condolences and prayers go out to his family.

This is the man that taught me that not only is reading educational, but reading can be fun. He taught me many things about American Literature along with how you can find beauty in almost any poem.
Although I have not seen this man in over 20 years, I remember the very first poem that I had to recite in front of the class. We had a list of poems/authors to choose from I chose "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost. To this day I still remember the words to that poem and about five more from Frost. So I would like to close with this to my favorite teacher.
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sounds the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Thank you Dan for the memories that will last forever.

Big D was like a second father to me. I am very sorry you have to go thru this, but I know he is together again with Mom Tobey.
I remember fondly the time spent together from scouts to euchre parties at the house to quiet talks or admiring his Black Powder Gun Collection.
Your father will be greatly missed. My prayers and thoughts go out to you all and even though I cannot be there tomorrow I will certainly be thinking about him.
I am greatful he lived a long and full life and that I was blessed to share a little of it with him.

Sorry to learn of Dan's death. When we were children and neighbors on Youngman Road we often played together. Most fun was riding in his dad's WWII heavy duty transport vehicle with a big roller on the front. He'd run over trees and such giving us quite a thrill. May God rest your soul, Dan.

My favorite English teacher in High School .. the big ole Teddy Bear said he wasn't going to graduate me...when I did ,I asked him why... he said " Cause I didn't want you back in my class" laughing.. Then he said it was because I knew the material inside and out just wasn't good at turning in the homework. He liked to act scary (big and tall guy) but I liked to call his bluff.. even scolded him one time for sitting on the desks in the back of the room as he lectured... told him he couldn't do it if we couldn't... he just gave me a little grin , what a patient man.. RIP Mr Tobey You will be missed. Class of 88'

My heart and prayers go out to the Tobey family. Mr. Tobey was the biggest teddy bear in school I knew. He always played the gruff bear, but we all knew he had such a big heart. He will be so missed by many of his students and mostly his family. God made him a special man to touch many lives and to educate many young minds. He did this with love and compassion. Rest in peace Mr. Tobey and know you are missed deeply.
