1918 - 2013
Irma Eliza (Culver) Wheelock, age 94, passed away at Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenville on June 1, 2013. Irma was born on September 12, 1918 in Lakeview, the daughter of "Mac" McClellan and Viola Addie (Sunderlin) Culver. Her parents and half-brother, Clyde, preceded her in death. Irma graduated from Lakeview High School in 1936, then attended Central State Teacher's College, now known as Central Michigan University. She became a teacher of Home Economics. She met Charles Ewing while teaching in Sand Lake and they were married in 1945. Irma taught for 34 years in Sand Lake, Durand, Vermontville, and Mackinaw City. She and Charles owned a motel there in retirement and enjoyed traveling. Irma and Charles were married for 46 years until his death in 1991. In 1993, Irma married John Wheelock and they resided in Levering. After his death in 2000, Irma moved to Breckenridge and later to Greenville in 2006 to be closer to her stepchildren. For the past seven years, Irma resided in the Green Acres Retirement Living community. Throughout her life, Irma was active in Catholic church activities and served the church in various roles. While in Greenville, she joined St. Charles Catholic Church. In earlier years, she participated in professional and community groups, including the Bliss Bunch of Carp Lake. Irma loved cats and had numerous furry pets over the years. She enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing, and oil painting. Her Green Acres apartment had many of her artistic works on its walls. Irma was also preceded in death by her beloved stepdaughter, Gail Weburg. She is survived by her stepson and wife, Dwight and Jan Wheelock of Greenville; Al and Marg Weburg of Breckenridge; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and other extended family members. The Mass of Christian Burial for Irma will be offered at 10:00 AM Friday, June 7 at St. Charles Catholic Church, the Rev. Michael F. Cilibraise presiding. Private inurnment will be in St. Bartholomew Catholic Cemetery, Newaygo. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Charles Catholic Church.
