1941 - 2013

Frank T. StankeyMr. Frank Thomas Stankey, age 71, died Saturday, August 10, 2013 at his home at Ziegenfuss Lake, Greenville. He was born November 1, 1941 in Grand Rapids, the son of Frank and Mary (Marshall) Stankey. After graduating from Wayland High School, he went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University and a master's degree from Central Michigan University. He was a physical education teacher for many years in the Greenville school system, also coaching wrestling from 1966-1972. He was most well known for his tenure as Greenville's varsity baseball coach, a post he held from 1967-1995. During his long career, Coach Stankey guided the Yellow Jackets to 456 wins, 11 conference titles, three district titles, and one regional title. In 1972, his Greenville team reached the state semifinals. Today Greenville baseball is played at Frank Stankey Field, named in his honor. Last September, he was inducted into the Greenville Athletics Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class. His impact went far beyond these accomplishments. He served as a mentor and friend to thousands of students, players, and colleagues, and positively impacted countless lives. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and will be deeply missed, especially by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn; daughters, Kay Garvey of Greenville and Julie (Richard) Toole of Ada; grandchildren, Zachary, Morgan, Kelsey, and Rachel; siblings, Bill (Lis) Stankey of Chase, Dick (Linda) Stankey of Grand Rapids, Nancy Harig of Comstock Park, and Ron (Ok Jung) Stankey of Cadillac; sister-in-law, Sharon (Gary) Zimmerman of Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, with Rev. Steve Charnley officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorial contributions in his honor may be given to the Education Foundation of Greenville's OUR3 Athletic Endowment Fund.

Coach Stankey was my coach at GHS in the mid '70s and I have not seen him since graduation, however, he had an huge impact on me and taught me lessons that served me well til this day. I think of him often and tell many stories of his coaching style. He was a great man and a wonderful model for young men. Many thanks to the family for sharing him with so many.

Marilyn, Kay and Julie, I am so very sorry. It has been such a long time since I've seen the Stankey family but have wonderful memories of Mr. Stankey taking us to Jones Ice Cream Parlor in Baldwin and playing bumper pool against him in your basement during my middle school years. What a great man and a real Blessing to all that knew him.

My condolences to Coach Stankey's wife, children and rest of the family. Coach Stankey was a kind, gentle and humble man (and extremely knowledgeable at baseball!). He always expected the best in people (on and off the field). I've always felt honored (and lucky) to have played under him for three years (1992-1994). God Bless you Mrs. Stankey and your family.

we knew frank from fishin (neighbors)on ziegenfuss lk as we live on the westend of the lake. He recently told us he dropped his cellphone in the lake this past winter(icefishing) and was waiting for the fish to call him and tell himm where and when to fish, well they can finally FIND his phone if they use my eyeglasses that i dropped in the lake to see his phone! oh well He let up a few of the secrets of "ziggy" to us but if frank was on the lake the fish population would surely diminish. maybe now we can catch some of them. Mrs stanky if you ever need a batch of gills to fry up, let us know and we'll try to deliver. We will surely miss him and so will the city of Greenville. What a guy! Peace be with you always. Jim & Dean (dean was a student of franks amazing tenure @GHS many yrs ago)

One of the first coaches that I worked with. Learned a lot, laughed a lot, became a better person because of him. There are few people in this world who have touched me the way Frank has. Heaven has a special one up there. Miss you guy.

Marilyn and family: Sincere condolences for your loss. "Coach" was a man who was much more than a coach. He taught those who were priveledged to play for him priceless life lessons. He always had sincere interest in the student/player well beyond the coaching years. Coach Stankey was a great"silent" and humble leader who's passion for the game taught us professionalism, excellence, attention to detail and a true respect for fellow man. He impacted my life greatly. Thanks Coach you will be missed but your legacy will remain.

So lost for words..But anyone who knew MR. Stankey was blessed to be around him. I was very fortune to have him as baseball coach. But it went way beyond that. As I got older, it really made me realize how he really made a big impact on my life at that tender young age. God Bless the whole family and I'm thankful to have all the memories with me forever!!!

Coach Stankey was an awesome and most unusual coach. He was a great leader whose style included excellence, passion for what he did, humble intensity, respect for everyone, professionalism, intelligence and attention to detail. He impacted my life. I can picture him hitting infield... a key to success through teaching fundamentals and practice, practice, practice. I am sure that his path to heaven was a frozen rope.
