1929 - 2013
Edna "Eddie" Ruth (Heimburger) Smith was born August 13, 1929 in Saginaw and claimed her reward in heaven on November 5, 2013 in Greenville. Eddie enjoyed growing up in Saginaw, with summers spent at Higgins Lake, where she helped her parents run a general store. Her college years were spent at Albion College, where she thoroughly enjoyed participating in the A capella choir and Madrigal singers. There she met Dewey D. Smith, her soulmate and future husband. After graduation, they were married in September of 1951. They then moved to Columbus, OH, where Dewey attended the Ohio State School of Dentistry and Eddie was employed in the Pathology Department of the university. After Dewey completed his studies, they moved to Manistee, where Dewey established his dental practice. During these years, they had four children and enjoyed their lives. Eddie was active in the United Methodist Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and being an active member of the United Methodist Women. She and Dewey were both active members of the Manistee community, participating in the Ramsdell Theater and other organizations. They enjoyed raising Norwegian Elkhounds and participating in AKC dog shows. After retirement, they moved to Rochester, where Eddie worked at Crittenden Hospital as a radiology transcriptionist. Dewey worked for the State of Michigan, and after his retirement, they returned north, living in Free Soil until his death in 1997. Eddie then returned Manistee, and enjoyed a retirement career as a librarian at Manistee County Library. She eventually settled in Greenville in 2006, where she has been an active member of the First United Methodist Church, serving as President of the United Methodist Women and in other capacities, and has held board positions at the Greenville Senior Center. It was there she shared her loved bridge and euchre with many new friends. Eddie is survived by her four children, Kimberley (Robert) Davis of Kalamazoo, Bret Smith of Greenville, Scott (Vicki) Smith of Milford, and Shannon (Ed) Tomaszewski of Washington, IL; grandchildren, Jennifer Coxie, Gavin (Dianna) Benoit, Ryan Benoit, Jaime Tomaszewski, Edward Tomaszewski, Eric Smith, and Jordan Smith; great-grandchildren, Clyde and Koltyn Coxie and Ryan H. Benoit; sister-in-law, Nonette Heimburger of Sumter, SC; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dewey; brother, Arthur Heimburger; and sister, Dorothy Doten. A memorial service in celebration of her life will held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the Greenville First United Methodist Church. Eddie's pastor, Rev. Steve Charnley, will serve as officiant. Private inurnment will take place at a later date in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Manistee. In lieu of flowers, member contributions may be made to the Greenville First United Methodist Church, Albion College, or Leader Dogs for the Blind.

May the God of all comfort now comfort you and us in our loss. Eddie was the first person to introduce herself to us at FUMC. She was always a helpful and knowledgeable resource to the Greenville community as a whole. I'm sure she will be one of the first to greet us in the Heavenly Kingdom.

Eddie has always been so happy and up beat when I have had the opportunity to talk with her. I am sorry for your loss, however, she is now in a wonderful place as I know that God would be happy to have her in Heaven!
