Bessie M. Karns, age 97 of Greenville, died late Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Spectrum Health United Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born September 6, 1916 in Glen Arbor, the daughter of Royal and Jessie (Wood) Ferris. On September 18, 1937, she married Francis M. Kerns in Traverse City. Her husband preceded her in death on October 27, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Helen OConnor; son, Patrick Karns; grandson, John OConnor; brothers, Glenn, Elmer, Ed, and Archie Ferris; and sisters, Erma Jackson and Alice Ekholm. Bessie is survived by her daughters, Janice and Jay Lowery of California and Alice Cesar of Greenville; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; special niece, Karen and John Reimer; and many other nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, January 13, 2014 at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, the Rev. John R. Kirkman officiating. Private interment will be in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. Memorial contributions may be given to Spectrum Health United Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
