1922 - 2014
Maxine Helen (Ruppert) Guilfoyle passed away quietly on July 2, 2014 surrounded by loved ones and after a short illness. She was preceded in death by Wayne, her husband of 70 years, three of her sisters and one brother. She is survived by all five of her children, Judy Wiersma (Ken), Jim Guilfoyle (Annette), Diane Hoover (Mike), Al Guilfoyle (Gloria) and Tom Guilfoyle (Sandy), fourteen grand children, thirteen great grand children, her sister Geraldine Knapp and brother Bernard Ruppert (Laurie). In her 92 ½ years, she accomplished things she could not have even imagined growing up as a farm girl in rural central Michigan and along the way provided an incredible role model for her children and others who knew her. Graduating from Lakeview High School in 1938, she continued her quest for education while raising and helping to support her family and earned her Associates Degree from Montcalm Community College in 1981 at the age of 59. Her jobs during her working life ranged from factory work to house cleaning to Postmistress of the Gowen, Michigan Post Office, from which she retired in 1986. She was proud of her travels that took her to all corners of the continental US as well as to Australia, Nova Scotia, Hawaii and Cuba. Her family is especially proud of the work she did in her community, serving as a Hospice Volunteer and board member, mentor for elementary school children, tutor in the adult literacy program, volunteer with the countys Commission on Aging, sewing quilts for new babies in her life, and her support for Settlement Lutheran Church and their food pantry. She influenced numerous generations of youngsters and families through her hours providing childcare at The Club Fitness Center in Greenville over almost 20 years. In support of her belief in the importance of education, she established the Guilfoyle Family Scholarship Fund providing college scholarships for graduates of Lakeview High School. Viewing will be held at Hurst Funeral Home in Greenville on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with the service on Wednesday July 9th at 11:00 am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers for Maxine, the family requests gifts in her name to the Guilfoyle Family Scholarship Fund through the Lakeview Area Community Fund of the Greenville Area Community Foundation, 101 N. Lafayette, Greenville, MI 48838.
