Geneva Haskins Howell died March 8th at Friends Care Center, Yellow Springs, Ohio. She was born on August 15, 1906, the daughter of Nancy Haskins (Elliott) on the family farm, George's Creek in Gallia County.
A lifelong resident of Gallia County and Gallipolis, Ohio, Geneva taught first grade in Gallipolis City Schools for 35 years and continued substituting after retirement. Revered by many students and colleagues, who continued these friendship, she felt blessed to have found her passion for teaching children.
Geneva began her long teaching career in a "one-room" country school house, when she was 18 years old and often rode horseback from her family farm to the Crown City School. She was a graduate of Rio Grande College, where she met and married William Harry Howell, now deceased.
After retirement from teaching she became increasingly active in the Grace United Methodist Church where she was Circle Chairman for four years, Vice President of Grace Guild and participated in many activities, serving on numerous committees.
Geneva is survived by a daughter, Nancy Howell-Koehler, son-in-law, Karl G. Koehler, granddaughter, Karla Koehler Lampkin and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Grace Methodist Chapel on Tuesday, March 11th at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Baptist Cemetery, Rio Grande, Ohio. Evening calling hours at McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, will be held on March 10th fro 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
