1923 - 2002

FORMER GALLIPOLIS CHIEF OF POLICE JOHN TAYLOR John Taylor, 79, of Gallipolis, died on Friday, December 27, 2002, at Cabell Huntington Hospital after a long illness. He was born on May 30, 1923 at the Perry County village of Junction City, Ohio, son of the late John W. and Charlotte Rose Taylor. He married Phyllis Grace Samples on February 5, 1945, who survives along with one daughter, Patricia Ellen, born in 1951, of Takoma Park, Maryland. Also surviving are two brothers, Richard (Mae) Taylor of Phoenix, Oregon, and Raymond Taylor, also of Gallipolis, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Otis Taylor. He attended Gallipolis city schools and served three years in the Army during WWII as a staff sergeant, including some months in the military police force in Italy and Algeria. Prior to becoming the Chief of Police in 1966 he was employed about twelve years as a city patrolman. After his retirement from the police force on March 1, 1982, he served six years as Bailiff of the Municipal Court under Judge James A. Bennett. He also finished a term as City Commissioner succeeding Mac McCreedy. He was known for fairness and even-handedness, often including a dose of humor, throughout his career in law enforcement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Gallipolis, VFW Post 4464, American Legion Post #27, and was a volunteer fireman for the City of Gallipolis for over two decades. Mr. Taylor was a past president of the Gallipolis Kiwanis Club and served a term on the GDC Citizen Advisory Board. He liked fixing up cars and being able to help others, from senior citizens to children, with repair projects. He enjoyed playing pool at the Senior Citizens Center and spending time and sharing stories with his many friends and neighbors. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 30, 2002, at the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, 420 First Ave., Gallipolis, with Pastor Archie Conn officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, December 29. Burial will be at the Pine Street Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Roger Brandenberry, Mike Tucker, J.D. Taylor, Lonnie McGuire, Mike Fulks and Keith Elliott. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the First Baptist Adult Men’s Sunday School class. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the Gallia County Veterans Service Organizations. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1100 Fourth Ave., Gallipolis, Ohio 45631.
