Victor Lee (Whitey) George, Jr. passed away peacefully on February 13, 2007 following a long and courageous battle with a series of extended illnesses. He was surrounded by loving family and close friends during his final weeks.
Whitey, as he was known all of his life, was born on February 15, 1936, one of six children of Victor (Tuck) and Viola George. Whitey’s brothers and sisters remember him as a caring and sensitive boy who took care of the younger kids. He loved to roller skate and square dance as a boy. He loved the outdoors and became an avid hunter.
Whitey met the love of his life, Mary Margaret Petrie, when he was 18 years old and married her 2 years later on September 2, 1956. Whitey and Mary lived their lives together for more than 50 loving years. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 2006.
Mary knew Whitey as the best husband any woman could want. Michele and Mike knew Pops as the best dad anyone could have…a generous dad with lots of patience and understanding. Family vacations and weekend road trips were a regular occurrence for Whitey’s family. Whitey’s grandkids were so much part of life at Pops’ house that they called it home.
Whitey was very proud of his home and his pool. He was also proud of the roses that he painstakingly grew. Often he would pick one for folks who came to visit.
Whitey retired from Bob Evans Sausage Plant in 1994 where he worked for nearly 40 years. He served on the Vinton City Council for several terms and was a volunteer firefighter for many years. In addition, in his later years he volunteered at Ray of Hope food pantry. He was a member of Vinton Masonic Lodge #131 and attended church at Harvest Time Worship Church and Fellowship Chapel. Everyone who knew Whitey remembers him as a hard working and self-less man who considered acts of kindness his personal responsibility. He gave to many charities and provided food to families who otherwise would have been without.
.
Whitey was a popular man with his family, his neighbors and his co-workers. He had a contagious personality and was a genuine ball of fire that brought life to even the dullest situations.
Whitey is survived by his wife, Mary, who cared for him tirelessly during his illness. He is also survived by his son Michael and daughter Michele; grandson Brandon and fiancé Cassie Perrod; grandson, Derrick; granddaughter Kiley; foster daughter Ann Moore; sister and brother-in-law Sharon Ann and Las Maldonado; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul Eddie and Mildred of Grove City and Johnny and Millie of Tampa, Florida;
sister-in-law Margaret “Tiny”; aunt, Pearl Burger; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends including his special friend Susie. He was predeceased by his mother and father, his brother Donald Ray, his sister Twila Lemaster and his favorite granddog Tori.
