C. Fern Worrel Notestine, 96, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at the Whetstone Care Center, Columbus.
A native of Misco, she was born Oct. 18, 1906.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer D. Notestine; her parents, James and Mary Worrel; one sister, Thelma Calkins; and two brothers, Jean and Noel Worrel.
Survivors include three sons, J. Carroll (Carol) Notestine of Columbus, Hayden E. (Carolyn) Notestine of Plymouth, Mich., and Vern D. (Rosanne) Notestine of Frankenmuth, Mich.; one brother, Norman Worrel of Columbus; nine grandchildren, Alan (Michelle) Notestine of Delaware, Neil (Kim) Notestine of Cincinnati, Betsy Brown of Avoca, Wis., Randy (Chris) Notestine of San Diego, Cathy (Chris) Short of Dexter, Mich., Melanie (Rick) draper of Westland, Mich., and Morgan, Molly and Sarah Notestine all of Frankenmuth; seven great-grandchilren, Alex Brown, Nathan Draper and Connor, Alaina, Timothy, Rachel and Bridget Notestine; and nephew and nieces, Jack Worrel, Renee Hunt, Betty Waser, Judy Worrel Maurer, David Worrel and Patricia Cavendish; and several great-nieces and nephews.
A graduate of West High School, Columbus, she earned a bachelor's degree in education and a masteer's in library science from The Ohio State University. She taught at Lakeview school, McDonald school and the high school in Lewistown where she taught English and French. She retired from Indian Lake High school as the librarian.
Her effective teaching skills were demonstrated by the many appreciative letters written by former students.
While living on the family farm in Logan County, she was a long-time member and Sunday School teacher at the DeGraff United Methodist Church. A determined genealogist, she was an avid bell collector and co-founder of the Heart of Ohio Bell Collectors Club.
She also belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma and the OSU Alumni Association. Having moved to Columbus in 1991, she was an active member of the Westerville Church of the Messiah and its Sara Circle. Through her church affiliation, she was spokesperson for Habitat for Humanity.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at the DeGraff United Methodist Church with Pastors Gene Erter and Michelle Notestine officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Graveside services are in Rea Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by the Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home, DeGraff. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Habitat for Humanity.
