
John Melvin Roby, 93, of Quincy, died at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at Logan Acres.
The Carrollton native was born Sunday, June 8, 1913, a son of the late Edgar I. and Inez Mabel Kincade Roby.
On Oct. 29, 1939, he married Lucille "Lucy" Black in DeGraff, and she survives, along with four sons, Rick Roby and G. Michael (Connie) Madden, both of DeGraff, Steven (Susan) Roby of Napoleon and Kenneth (Jane) Madden of Sidney; three daughters, Judith (Tom) DeLong of DeGraff and Rita (Richard) Maier and Nina (John) Ulmer, both of Bellefontaine; two brothers, Clyde E. Roby of West Liberty and Charles E. (Dorothy) Roby of DeGraff; one sister, Mary Inez Haas of Jackson Center; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by one son, John M. Roby Jr.; two brothers, Wilbur W. Roby and George B. Roby; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
A member of the DeGraff United Methodist Church, he loved farming, raising sheep and a variety of other animals, and served as a 4-H adviser for a number of years. He started working with the Logan County Highway Department as a mechanic and later became maintenance supervisor.
The family receives friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home, DeGraff, where the funeral begins at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Julia L. Ronngren officiating. Burial is in the Greenwood-Union Cemetery, DeGraff.
