Charles E. Roby, 86, of DeGraff, died at 10:47 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007, at Mary Rutan Hospital.
He was born in DeGraff on April 5, 1921, a son of the late Edgar I. and Inez Mabel Kincade Roby. Four brothers, Clyde L. Roby, Wilbur W. Roby, John M. Roby and George B. Roby, also preceded him in death.
On July 12, 1941, he married the former Dorothy A. Black in DeGraff and she survives, along with a son, David (Shelly) Roby of Russells Point; daughter, Kay (Jim) Stammen of Toledo; sister, Mary Inez Haas of Jackson Center; grandchildren, Chris (April) Stammen, Greg (Lori) Stammen, Todd (Grace) Stammen, Brad Stammen, Matt Roby, Joe (Amie) Roby and Ben (Maleisa) Roby; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A 1940 graduate of DeGraff High School, he was a member of the DeGraff United Methodist Church where he served on various committees.
He was a former DeGraff mayor and village councilman.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a retired mechanic and truck driver for Midstates Container Corp. in DeGraff and farmed for many years.
He was a life member and past commander of Miami Valley Post 652 American Legion, DeGraff, currently serving as post service officer. He was a life member of the Logan Memorial Post 3528 VFW, Quincy; and was a charter member and past president of the Riverside Lions Club.
A 57-year member, past master and 26-year secretary for the Boggs Lodge 292 Free and Accepted Masons, he served as past district deputy grand master of the 15th Masonic District, was past high priest of Lafayette Chapter 60 Royal Arch Masons, Bellefontaine, was a member of the Holy Order of High Priesthood, served as illustrious master of Logan Council 85 Royal and Select Masons, Bellefontaine; served as commander of Bellefontaine Commandery 61 Knights Templar, was a member of AASR Valley of Dayton and its Advancement of the Rite Committee, and was a member of AASR Dayton Lodge of Perfection 14th Degree, AASR Dayton Council, Princes of Jerusalem 16th Degree, AASR Dayton Chapter Rose Croix HRDM 18th Degree, AASR Dayton Consistory SPRS 32nd Degree, Knight of the York Cross of Honor, the Masonic Veterans Association, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Ohio Northern Forest 188 Tall Cedars of Lebanon of North America and Knight Eminent Commanders Association.
He was a member and past president of the Logan County 32 Club, treasurer of the Logan County Shrine Club, sovereign master of Hi-Point Council 120 Allied Masonic Degrees, honorary member of Indian Lake Lodge 722 F&AM, Lakeview; member of the former Constance Chapter 78 of Order of Eastern Star, DeGraff, Sarah Elizabeth Chapter 335 OES, West Liberty and Bellefontaine Chapter 459 OES.
The Rev. Julia L. Ronngren conducts a funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home, DeGraff, where calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, followed at 8 p.m. by a Masonic service. Burial is in Highland Memorial Cemetery, West Liberty.
