1923 - 2007
Marion F. Detrick, Jr., M.D., father and grandfather, of Coder Road, Maumee, died quietly at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center on Friday, December 7, 2007, at the age of 84, surrounded by his family. Dr. Detrick was born in Connersville, Indiana on July 5, 1923, though he spent most of his life in Ohio. He graduated from DeGraff High School in 1941, and then attended Urbana College before earning his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University. He graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1947 and began residency training at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Columbus before serving in the United States Army in Japan from 1951 to 1953. Upon his discharge, Dr. Detrick completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Henry Ford Hospital in 1956 and spent the next fifty years practicing in Ohio, first in Findlay and later in Toledo. In 1972, he fulfilled a life long dream of teaching future physicians by serving full time on the faculty of the Medical College of Ohio. Although he returned to private practice in 1975, he never lost his love for teaching and continued to serve on the faculty as a teacher and a clinician both in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and in the Department of Psychiatry. He was Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Flower Hospital in Sylvania and also served in numerous positions at St. Luke’s Hospital in Maumee. As much as he loved the practice of medicine, he also loved serving his community, serving on the boards of Lutheran Social Services and Lutheran College Ministries. Marion was an active member of All Saints Lutheran Church, serving in many capacities. He enjoyed fishing, boating on the Great Lakes and took pleasure in gardening and working on projects.
Marion was married to his high school sweetheart, Pauline Neer Detrick for 49 years until her death in 1996. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Roberta Zechman Detrick, her five children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his daughter, Rebecca A.D. Zechman (John) of Sylvania, and their children, Nathan (Tara), James, and Kathryn; his son, Dr. Jonathan M. Detrick (Cyndee) of Maumee, and their children, Matthew and Melissa; his son, Colonel (ret.) Andrew L. Detrick (Kathy) of Dayton, and their children, Emily Lucier (Mike), Benjamin, and Amy Hartel (Chris), and their children, Hailey, Makenzie, Christian and Logan; and his daughter, Mary D. Kotnik (Paul) of Commerce Township, Michigan, and their children, Elizabeth, Lynn and Megan. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Andrew Detrick (Barbara) of Naples, Florida; his sister, Clara Belle DeWeese (Lowell) of Sidney; and his brother-in-law, Arden “Stretch” Roberson of Ada and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Marion F. and Alice (Hartley) Detrick and his sister, Francis Roberson.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 13 from 3:30 – 8:30 at All Saints Lutheran Church (419-865-7701), 5445 Heatherdowns Blvd. Visitation will also be on Friday, December 14 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. preceding services at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Lutheran Church. Graveside services and internment will be at Greenwood-Union Cemetery, on Route 235 in DeGraff, Ohio at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in his name to All Saints Lutheran Church in Toledo or Northwest Ohio Lutheran Social Services. Arrangements are being handled by Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home, DeGraff, OH.

My deepest sympathies to your family. Dr. Detrick delivered my son in 1984, and I can still remember him walking by my room sticking his head in the door, as I held him in my arms, with a smile on his face telling me "your going to spoil him". I'll always remember him fondly, he was a part of one of the happiest days of our lives. Debbie

Our sincere sympathy on the death of a beloved doctor. Dr. Detrick delivered our youngest son Mark and I will never forget what a caring man he was. When I was ready to deliver he alone pushed my cot into the delivery room. That was almost 49 years ago. We will never forget him.
