Howard Marion Schmidt

Howard Marion Schmidt, 90, of DeGraff, died at 1:49 a.m. Monday, April 21, 2008, at Mary Rutan Hospital.

He was born in Dayton on Aug. 26, 1917, a son of the late William R. and Dorothy Nill Schmidt. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Paul W. Schmidt.

On May 29, 1945, he married Wanda Evelyn Smith in St. Paris, and she survives, along with a daughter, L. Kay (Larry) McMillen of DeGraff; a sister, Pauline (Charlie) Smith of Springfield; two grandchildren, Cody Lee McMillen and Darcy Lynn McMillen; and several nieces and nephews.

A bee keeper for 41 years, he was a member of the DeGraff United Methodist Church and Boggs Lodge F&AM 292. He served the village of DeGraff for 17 years as a council member, water board member and a two-term mayor. He was instrumental in an effort to bring an iron removal plant to DeGraff. He enjoyed fishing and harness racing.

The Rev. Julia Ronngren conducts a funeral at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home, DeGraff, where calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial is in Greenwood-Union Cemetery, DeGraff.

Wanda and Kay, I was so sorry to hear of Howard's death. Wanda, my sympathies are with you at this time. You are in my prayers. Kay, no matter how old or young we are, it's hard to lose your Daddy and speaking from experience, I know how you feel. I understand your sorrow and I share your grief. With love, Kris
