
Carl H. "Sonny" Newman, 83, passed away May 16, 2011, at his residence in De Graff surrounded by loving family members.
He was born December 13, 1927, in Quincy, OH, the tenth child of eleven, to Lewis and Clare Kendall Newman. Five brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
His wife Bernice Dorsey Newman, of 61 years, survives along with two sons, Steve (Sherry) Newman of Quincy and Rick (Brenda) Newman of Dayton, and one daughter, Susan (Larry) Strayer of DeGraff. Also surviving are two grandsons, Craig Newman and Derek Strayer, one granddaughter, Jennifer Johnson, four great grandsons and one great granddaughter all of the De Graff-Quincy area. Ann (Kenneth) Turner, Betty Stryker and Cecil Newman are his surviving siblings.
Mr. Newman graduated from Quincy High School in 1946 and was a proud member of Boggs Lodge 292 F&AM, DeGraff.
Although retiring after 30 years as District Equipment Supervisor with Ohio Department of Transportation District 7, Sonny is remembered by many friends as a mechanic. He worked at local gas stations and was available to help with a mechanical problem. One friend said, "Sonny knew what was wrong with a car just by hearing it run".
He always enjoyed traveling and working in his yard. He loved to watch ballgames on TV with his grandson, Derek, who he referred to as Peanut, especially OSU Buckeyes and the Cincinnati Reds.
The family has planned visitation at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 19, at the Rexer-Riggin-Madden Funeral Home in De Graff. Pastor John Leighty will conduct funeral services there at 11 a.m. Burial is in the Greenwood-Union Cemetery, DeGraff.
To remember Mr. Newman, the family requests that contributions be made to Universal Home Health and Hospice through the funeral home in lieu of flowers.
