Passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at LakeView Community Hospital, Paw Paw. Bill was born May 25, 1926 in Grand Rapids, the son of Harry and Dorothea (Olesen) Chandler. He was a 1944 Graduate of Wyoming High School, Attended Grand Rapids Junior College, and a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy. Bill enlisted in the Michigan Department of State Police in 1948 and retired as Captain Fifth District Commander in 1982, then was the coordinator for the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Police Academy from 1983-1990. He was a member of the Lawrence Lions Club, Fraternal Order of Police, Lawrence, MI Lodge, and Grand Haven Lodge #139 F & AM. Bill was a very active outdoorsman. He and Dort spent many vacations enjoying the Fox River, trout fishing. As his sons grew, Bill passed on his passion of hunting and fishing to them. Even with his granddaughters, Bill’s gentle way taught the girls how to bait a hook, and appreciate the wildlife. On June 17, 1950 in Grand Rapids, Bill was united in marriage to the former Dorothy A. Swift who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons, David I. (Victoria) Chandler of Eau Claire, Daniel L. Chandler of Kalamazoo; 2 grandchildren, Jacqueline and Megan Chandler; sister, Beulah (Edward) VandenBout of Newaygo; many beloved nieces and nephews. His parents and a brother, Harry B. Chandler preceded Bill in death. Friends are being received, Friday 6-8 pm at the ADAMS Funeral Home, Paw Paw where services will be held Saturday 1 pm with Chaplain Bill Sanders of the Michigan State Police, Officiating. Interment with military honors will be Tuesday, May 27, 2003, 10:30 am at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

Dear Dave: I heard too late about your dad's passing to attend the services. I always admired your dad. He was always friendly and had just the right touch of humor. My condolences to you and your family on your loss. My thoughts are with you.
