HUBBARD, Marlin “Spike”

Passed away Sunday morning, May 25, 2003 at his home. Spike was born Sept. 24, 1923 in Kalamazoo the son of Marlin and Myrtle (Giddings) Hubbard. He was a 1942 graduate of Mattawan High School and enlisted into the U.S. Air Force (1943-1946) serving in the Italian Campaign with the 34th Air Depot Group. Spike was born to be a mechanic working thru his high school years at Slatinsky Service Station in Mattawan and in March of 1946 opened and operated Spikes Service Station until his retirement in 1991. His community service included serving on the Mattawan School Board, Mattawan Village Council, and a member of the V.F.W. Spikes heart and soul was given to the Mattawan Volunteer Fire Department. He was a life member and served as Chief for 38 years. He is still serving as president of the Mattawan Fire Board and Paw Paw Fire Board for Antwerp Township. With his love for water, Spike spent forty plus years at St. Joe Harbor on his boats, Lynn-Sue and Angel. On July 9, 1976 in Tekonsha, MI Spike was united in marriage to Lurlene “Kitty” Kinter who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Lynn (Dennis) Coy; step-sons, Kent (Brenda) Kaser, Kurt (Lynn) Kaser, Gary (TaRay) Kaser and Craig (Ann) Kaser; son-in-law, Richard Long; grandchildren, Evan Long, Brandon Coy, Kristyn, Ashley, Tera, Alexz and Andrew Kaser, Shannon Boulter and Dylan Richards, Alison and Amanda Kaser, Glen and Colleen Gast; sister, Arlene Glidden; nephew, Terry (Corkey) Glidden & family, nieces, Mary (Rick) Diemer & family, Sherry (Dave) Reinoehl and Family, Sue (Kenny) Welch and family, Gerrie Glidden-Coffman & family; many extended family and friends. Spike was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue Long, his father, Marlin Sr., mother, Myrtle and step-mother Goldie, Family will receive friends Sunday, June 1, 3-5 & 6-8 pm. at the new location of the ADAMS Funeral Home, 502 W. Michigan Ave., Paw Paw where funeral services will be held Monday, 11 a.m. with Rev. Charles Cohagen officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mattawan. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Van Buren County, Mattawan Skate Park or the First Congregational Church, Mattawan.
