HARRIS, Evelyn W. (nee Moshier)

Passed away Thursday evening, Jan. 1, 2004 at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence, Kalamazoo. Evelyn was born March 6, 1909 in Mattawan, the daughter of the late Roy and Wave (Lyle) Moshier. She spent her entire life on the family (centennial) farm, established in 1864 by her great grandfather, Harrison Moshier. Evelyn attended Richmond country school through 8th grade and was a graduate of Paw Paw High School Class of 1927 and the Bronson School of Nursing in 1931. In 1985 Evelyn and her husband Max were inducted into the Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame. She enjoyed sewing, camping and gardening. She was a member of the Mother’s Club during World War II, was a Red Cross volunteer and instructor, member of the Cooperative Extension Women’s Club, Bronson Hospital Alumni Association and the Van Buren County Historical Society. On April 9, 1932 at the family farm in Mattawan Evelyn married her high school sweetheart Max W. Harris who preceded her in death on May 4, 1993. They spent their working years as farmers, producing vegetables for the first roadside market in the area. They worked 75 acres of grapes under contract to Welch’s Grape Cooperative Surviving are 4 daughters, Maxine (Murray) Sayre of Rodney, MI, Marguerite (Bill) Aukerman of Delton, MI, Mary Ellon Gibson of Warren, MI and Roylinda (Richard) Rumbaugh of Mattawan; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends Sunday 4-6 p.m. at the ADAMS Funeral Home, Paw Paw where funeral service will be held Monday, 2 p.m. with Pastor Thomas Koning of Faith Chapel, Alamo, MI officiating. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw. Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame or the Van Buren County Red Cross. Maxine, Marguerite, Mary Ellen and Roylinda; I am so sorry to hear that your precious mom has passed. She was a person, beyond belief. I absolutely adored her. Although it has been many, many years since visiting with her, I can still see her face, smile; and, hear that wonderful laugh of hers - - - totally infectious. Roylinda, remember the TEETH !!!!!! My deep love, friendship and the Lords many blessings to you all. See you, again someday, 'mom'!
