MELVIN, Robert S.

Passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Metron of Bloomingdale. Robert was born February 26, 1927 in Bloomingdale the son of Clare and Anna (Neilson) Melvin. Robert was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. He was employed as an automobile salesman most of his life starting out part-time at Stony’s Ford in Gobles then Schamehorn Chevrolet in Bloomingdale then retiring from John H. Tapper, Inc. in Paw Paw after 27 years. He took a lot of pride in taking care of his customers and enjoyed helping and giving to others. Robert was the a past president of the Bloomingdale Village Council, and recently retired Gobles city commission after 20 years and also had served as mayor pro-tem. He was a member of the Otsego Moose Lodge #345 and Fraternal Order of Police and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed Las Vegas trips and was an avid outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting, camping and cooking specialties outdoors for family and friends. On December 31, 1945 in Otsego Robert was united in marriage to the former Margaret Russell who preceded him in death in 1978. Surviving are 2 daughters, Kathryn (Doug) Latchaw of Bloomingdale, Jayne Brown of Gobles; 2 sons, Robert (Mary) Melvin of Bloomingdale, Michael Melvin of Wisconsin; 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth Middaugh, John Keller, Jr., Steve Brown, Stephanie Brown and Robbie Melvin; 4 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Richard (Maxine) Melvin of Hartford, Raymond (Joyce) Melvin of Bloomingdale. He was preceded in death by a son Ronald S. Melvin in 1952 and 2 sisters. Friends are being received Friday 4-7 pm at the ADAMS Funeral Home, Paw Paw where services will be held Saturday at 10 am. Interment will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Bloomingdale. Memorial contributions may be made to the Allegan General Hospital Oncology Unit or the City of Gobles Children’s Park fund. I am the second daughter of Evelyn Nielsen Whitney (Olah). I recall many happy days of my childhood with Clair and Anna Melvin and their three sons at their farm. Time and space have separated us, but fond memories remain. My condolences to all of Bob's family and I would love to hear from all of you. God Bless!
