Frederick W. MartinAGE: 84

MARTIN, Frederick W.

Lawton

With great sadness we announce the death of our father. He died peacefully Sunday, April 4, 2004 at his residence. Fred was born July 16, 1919 in Chicago, IL to Sabatino (Sam) and Paulina (Hintz) Martin. In 1943 he married the former Adeline Marie Pucher and shared 52 wonderful years of marriage. Fred spent 4 years serving his country in the Army as a sergeant in the Aleutian Islands during WWII. He received the Good Conduct Medal, The Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with the Bronze Battle Star, 4 Overseas Service Bars and 1 Service Stripe. Fred returned to Chicago and opened his own bakery. He then moved to Lawton with his growing family in 1952 and became a grape farmer. Through the years Fred continued farming while pursuing other careers at places such as Eaton's and Upjohn's; where he retired as a cook and security guard. Fred was a lively man of 84 who enjoyed working in his garden, bowling in league after league, throwing his horseshoes in tournaments across the country, and presiding over the huge family gatherings in his basement, his favorite place to critique his children's cooking and dispense compassionate advice. Other interests included: baking, woodworking and gambling. His love for animals was evidenced in his pets, Chi Chi and Kitty, who loved and were loved by Fred. Above all, he will be remembered as a loving husband, adored father, doting grandpa and proud great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister, Rose Hughes. Fred is survived by 3 siblings: Ted and Russell Martin and Lenore Bentley. He will be greatly missed by his beloved family Barbara (James) Minehart of Kalamazoo; Nancy (James) Manning of Paw Paw, Sue (Duane) White of Decatur, Frederick Jr. (Susie) Martin of Paw Paw, David (Cris) Martin of Paw Paw, Jan (Gary) LaPine of Mattawan; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren. Fred will also be missed by his loving friend and companion, Marge Speich. Many nieces, nephews & friends. Friends will be received Wednesday 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the ADAMS Funeral Home, Paw Paw, where services will be held Thursday at 2 pm. Internment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kalamazoo Horseshoe Pitching Club or the Scoliosis Research Society. To share a memory or condolence on line: www.timeformemory.com/adams

Good old lefty, boy we sure loved in at Rainbow Lanes. Hi this is Clarke, I bowled with Fred on Mondays with my Paw Paw Press Team and in the Majors on Thursday with him. Back years ago with the Wed. night team, so long ago I can't rember. Fred was a great sportmans and a great friend of mine, we always had a great time going to the tournments together. We also bowled in the same mixed league for quite a few years. A great man, I know he will be missed by a lot of friends, he had many of them. May the Lord take him in his arms. My prayers are with you. Clarke Rieck
