I have to wonder how many ways Jan will be missed. She was so many people wrapped into that little body. She was military, she was an animal lover, she was a sweepstaker, she was an organizer, she was a friend who stayed in touch with people for years, she was a survivor, and she was an inspiration. I think that the only time Jan wasn't completely honest with me was when she told me, "You wouldn't have liked me before." I am quite sure that I would have liked the bossy, give em hell, Jan of the military. After all, she wasn't that different as a civilian. She drove herself and others to get things done. Perhaps she mellowed a bit with age--we all do--but the "can-do" Jan was always there. I am sure that no matter how long anyone knew Jan we all have the same answer to the question "how long did you know her?" That answer seems to always be "not long enough."

The highest compliment Jan could pay someone was to say: she’s a “classy” lady or he’s a “classy” guy. That meant the person not only looked sharp, but was for real, not phony–covering up any lack in skills or character with manners and clothing. I said she was “classy” once and she looked at me like I’d lost my mind, and that may have been what she said, “Have you lost your mind?” But now that you’re not here to argue with me, Lady, I’m saying it for the whole world to hear, “You were classy, and lived a class act life.” Love, Celesta

Thank you for informing those of us in Syracuse, NY who knew Jan. We contested with her to bring more women from NY than she could from Michigan to the Dedication of WIMSA. Jan won! She inspired us to greater heights. If her efforts for the cemetery is still afloat, please let us know. We would like to make a donation. I'm sure you will all miss Jan, we shall also. I am truly sorry to hear of Jan's passing. I printed papers and cards for her to enter sweeps with and it gave us something to talk about through email. I will miss the funny jokes and the email's that always started with:"Won anything good lately?" Rest in peace my friend. Donna

Jan was just a super person, full of moxie and can-do attitude, and a wonderful friend! She was a truly inspirational person! I can hear her now, "Yeah, right! Full of something! Best damn bullshitter!" ...and we'd both laugh. The element of truth in that was that she could probably sell anyone just about anything....including selling herself on doing something...even if there was great risk involved... And her odds were generally much better than those of the rest of us.... If I were to pick a song to give my impression of Jan, I'd probably pick Kenny Rogers' song, The Gambler .... especially these lines, including, of course the chorus: [You know]..I’ve made a life out of readin’ people’s faces, And knowin’ what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.... ...[And] if you’re gonna play the game, [friend], ya gotta learn to play it right... You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em, Know when to walk away and know when to run. You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table. There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done. Now ev’ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin’ Is knowin’ what to throw away and knowing what to keep. ’cause ev’ry hand’s a winner and ev’ry hand’s a loser, And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep. So when [she’d survived the surgery, she tried calling one last time], ...and faded off to sleep. And somewhere in the darkness [my friend Jan, she] broke even. But in [her life and love] ...I've found an ace that I could keep. Thanks for the love and your presence Jan! You left us too soon! YOU of all people were supposed to live forever! We miss you terribly! Love, Rose and her hubby Terry and daughter Jennifer
