Passed away Wednesday afternoon, January 18, 2006. Stew was born May 12, 1926 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada the son of the late Francis I. and Helen M. (Stewart) Carpenter. He was a graduate of the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario in 1950 with a degree in Horticulture. He and his family moved to the Paw Paw/Lawton area in 1961. He was employed by the Van Buren County Co-Operative Extension as a Grower Consultant for 10 years. Stew then went on to purchase and operate his own Fruit Farm, Diversity Farms in Paw Paw for many years. He was a member of the Van Buren County Farm Bureau and was Past President of Michigan Horticultural Society in 1986. On September 16, 1950 in Beamsville, Ontario, Stew was united in marriage to Olive N. McEwan who survives. Also surviving are a son, Kevin (Marsha) Carpenter of Destin, FL; 3 daughters, Gayle (Bradley) Case of Waterford, MI, Holly (Timothy) Strong of Paw Paw and Cindy Evans of Lawton; grandchildren, Christopher, Leah, Trevor, Brandon, Shelby, Aaron and Ainsley; sister, Susanne Logue of Toronto, Ontario; several nieces, nephews and many friends. Preceding him in death, granddaughter Marjo Shields. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw with Rev. Carolin Spragg officiating.
