Charles Aubrey Shephard stepped off this mortal coil in the early morning hours of Saturday March 25, 2006 at home peacefully. Cremation has taken place. “Charlie” was born on September 16, 1923 in Corning, Arkansas the son of the late Joseph and Lucy Mae (Smith) Shephard and served his country in World War II in the U.S. Navy. After the war he met and married his soul mate Anne K. Gluchacki in Fall River, MA on September 4, 1945 and the newlyweds moved to Kalamazoo and then to Portage where their family blossomed. His chosen profession was plumbing and he rose to the top of his craft becoming a licensed Master Plumber and Contractor and in addition to owning and operating Shephard Plumbing. Charlie served the city of Portage as President of the Plumbing Board during the mid-1960’s. Charlie enjoyed his many friends and family, bowling, fishing, hunting and was considered by many to be an armchair comedian for his wonderful sense of humor. He retired to 3 Legged Lake in Bloomingdale. He was preceded in death by his wife Anne, on May 12, 2001; a son, David Shephard in 1948 and a daughter, Marsha Shephard in 1959. Surviving are a daughter, Lexie A. (David) Paro of Mattawan; 6 sons, Chuck Shephard of Kennesaw, GA, Steve (Wendy) Shephard of Bloomingdale, Joe (Linda) Shephard of Kalamazoo, Bob (Deb) Shephard of Kalamazoo, John (Ann) Shephard of Mattawan, and Jim (Jodi) Shephard of Portage; 16 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sister, Pearl White of CA; many nieces, nephews, and his near and dear friend Ann Miles. The mark of a successful life is to leave this earth a better place than you found it, and Dad (Grandpa) you can hardy imagine how well you succeeded. Family will receive friends and celebrate Charlie’s life on Sunday, April 2nd, 1-5 p.m. at the Bloomingdale Conservation Club, 16681 41st Street, Bloomingdale. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Michigan (Van Buren County). Arrangements are by the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw.
