MANNING, Carl D.
Mattawan
Carl D. Manning was born in Almena Township on August 16, 1929. He passed away Thursday evening, Feb. 14, 2008 at Watervliet Community Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Janice E. Manning, his parents Carl C. Manning and Maude S. (Banks) Manning all of Mattawan. He is survived by his son, Mark A. (Linda) Manning of South Haven, MI; daughter, Susan L. (Brian) Stansbury of Mattawan; 3 grandchildren, Robert Joseph RJ Manning of Chicago, Jared Stansbury and Jordan Stansbury of Mattawan; brother, Bernard (Joann) Manning of Portage; sister, Virginia Anderson of Grand Rapids and many nieces and nephews. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and attended Albion College. He served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1952. He worked and retired from Easton Yale and Towne (Fullers) in Kalamazoo and was a life member of the United Auto Workers. A lifelong farmer he and his family raised grapes, asparagus and Morgan horses. Carl was active in his community. He served as Boy Scout Leader in the 1960s. and he helped found the Mattawan Rocket Football program. He and Janice were active in the Mattawan Athletic Boosters while his children attended school. From the 1950s to 1970s he was a member and President (10 years) of the Mattawan School Board and served on the Intermediate School District Board. He served as Supervisor of Almena Township from 1980 to 1996, and represented Almena Township on the Paw Paw Area Fire Authority Board until his death. He was a life member and Past Master of the Mattawan Masonic Lodge #268. Carl was honored on several occasions as Mason of the Year for the lodge and as Mason of the Year for the Kalamazoo District. He was an honorary member of Bloomingdale-Hudson Masonic Lodge #221. He was Santa Claus for the Mattawan Public Library and was always smiling and had a ready joke. He never met anyone who wasnt a friend. A celebration of Life and Masonic memorial service will be held in the spring. Interment will be in the Almena Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw.

Dear Mark,
Im very sorry to hear about your recent losses. I just learned of them when we had my fathers funeral at adams today. My condolances and prayers go out to you and your family.

Durwood was a wonderful person. I remember him as being Santa for OES Christmas functions. I have a lot of fond memories of Durwood and Janice. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.
