Just today, I heard that Max had died in February. I have many fond memories of him and your families. He always had a smile, was ready to help anyone who needed it. He always had penny candy in his store and would cash in pop bottles for it. When my family moved to Almena and before we had our own telephone, I remember walking to the store with Mom or Dad to use the phone in the back of the store that we had to crank to get the operator and tell her who you wanted to talk to or give her the number of anyone out of the area. I also remember when my sister, Peggy, was about 1 yr. Dad brought her up to the store and gave her a chocolate ice cream cone. That was great ice cream. I know you will miss Max, but know he is in heaven with Fern...probably running some kind of market there, too. Bonnie Brundage Jones

I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Mumfords passing. I will always remember my grandfather taking me to the Almena general store and giving me a penny. I would place my candy selection and that penny on the counter and Max would say 'thank you, Susie'. Prayers to his family.

Our most heartfelt sympaty goes out to the family..I read it in the paper and was very sadened for the loss for all of you. I'm sure you do remember the Reidt Twins in Almena..I have many fond memories of working for your parents, doing ironing, cleaning , washing windows, they'd always find something for me to do, so I could earn some money.... and sitting at the counter eating ice cream cones, malts or the Famous Banana Split. Please accept our prayers. Our Mother also just passed away, on 3/9/08 and if it wasn't for the Adams Funeral home..to help us all begin our healing, I just feel blessed by their overwhelming kindness.

Max was my bus driver when I was a young age going to school in Paw Paw. I was the last one on his bustop and he would always tell me the great war stories. I also have the memories of my father going to the Almena store for Max's famous breakfast sausage. He always had the warm smile on his face. My thoughts go to both Rick Walters and Mike Mumford (fellow classmates) Your grandfather was a great man from Almena who served his country proudly and will be missed but not forgotten.

We just noticed the passing of Max in the Paw Paw paper and wish to extend our condolences to the entire family and friends. We live in the upper penninsula so are a little late in getting news. He was well known to us in Allegan and we kept in touch when the family moved to Almena. A more well like man we never knew. best regards Rudy Whitney

We were surprised and sad to hear of Max's passing. We just found out today from Mom (Irene Cramer) who is now staying up here in Lansing near us. She gets the Kazoo Gazette, although usually a couple days delayed. JB and I both have many memories of Max, always smiling, enjoying the fun in life and always willing to help out anyone. Mom and Dad and Max and Fern were great pals in years past, and I remember Max since I was very young. I've also heard the story that he is responsible for my Mom and Dad meeting ! I like to think He and your Mom and my Dad are up there in heaven, sharing "war" stories and all their fun memories. We know he will be missed by you Adele, Mary Ellen, and Bill. But he will forever be in you hearts. Peace, Sharon (Cramer) Allaire

Mr. Mumford was a wonderful man and my family and I are so sorry for your loss. Your dad had a good life and they sure don't make men like that anymore! Wanted to come and hug you in person, Bill, Adele, and Mary Ellen, but have this awful chronic cough I can't seem to shake and hurts down into my chest. I just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you. I remember mom always telling me to ask for Mr. Mumford when she wanted a good cut of meat. You had lovely parents and now they can be together. I will always remember your dad's great big smile and his kindness. You were definitely blessed to be raised in such a wonderful family. With much affection, Jan Wert and Family
