I was deeply saddened by the email announcing that my long-term friend and fraternity brother, Charlie (Bud) Dent had passed away. I met Charlie (which was what he went by in those days) when we were both freshmen at Ohio State in 1952. We both pledged that year to Alpha Phi Omega, the Boy Scout service fraternity and we lived in the same tier of barracks-like student housing under Ohio Stadium (the Buckeye Club I was on the second floor directly above Charlie on the first floor). In our Junior and Senior years we were hall-mates at another dormitory, Baker hall, and we both remained active in Alpha Phi Omega during our 4 years at Ohio State. I recall that Charlie was Chair one year for the APhiO Ugliest Man on Campus contest, in which campus notables vied, in costume, for that honor, with the proceeds going to Boy Scout charities.
In 1955, Charlie and I took a notable fishing trip to Sugar Island, Michigan with Al Hoerner, my roommate our senior year and an APhiO brother, since deceased. In the mail that accumulated during a recent several week visit to the east coast, I discovered a packet of photographs from that trip, which Charlie had sent to me on April 8, two days before his death. I treasure them!
We lost touch with each other following graduation at Ohio State. I moved on to California, where I have spent the last 45 years. I was delighted to hear in 2002 from Charlie, who had tracked me down to our new home in Monterey. Since then, we have stayed in touch, largely through the modern miracle of email.
Yesterday morning, after I had learned of Charlies passing, a phrase of the APhiO song, which we sang many times together at Ohio State, came unbidden to mind. It was, I think, the first time I have recalled it in the past 50 plus years.
Heres to Alpha Phi Omega, loyal brothers we,
True to self and to each other, firm in loyalty
I will miss you, Charlie, and my heart goes out to your family and other friends.

To Danna and all of the family that you and Bud so proudly and lovingly nurtured and enjoyed: You are in my prayers as you celebrate the wonderful life and, sadly, feel the pain from the sudden loss of this truly fine gentleman. I was acquainted with Bud only from our exchanges of email. From the very first of his delightful epistles, I knew that he was my friend. I hope he knew that I was his friend, too. I miss him very much and I will never forget him.

To Mrs. Dent, Susie, Scott, and Bud's entire family. My deepest sympathy goes out to each and everyone of you. I remember the first time I met Bud. It was actually at Susie and Brads wedding rehersal. I will always remember his smiling face, that's just something that photographers just never seem to forget, it will be forever etched in my memory.
I am so sorry for your loss, but know that your dear husband, father, and grandfather is resting in the arms of his Lord and Savior and we will all be together again someday. What a party that will be! My thoughts and prayers are with each and everyone of you. Susie and Scott...I know how you feel..I just lost my Dad too. It's not easy, just hold tight to the times you shared, the laughter, and especially your Dad's great sense of humor. What a blessing his life was to all of you.
