John passed away Monday morning, June 30, 2008 at his home. He was born June 13, 1927 in Buffalo, NY. John was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and also enlisted in the U.S. Army in the years leading up to the Korean War.

John was employed by Eaton Corporation in Kalamazoo before retiring in 1975. On June 30, 1945, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Chapin who preceded him in death in July, 1975. John was fortunate enough to find love again and married Maudie Mae Mead on February 14, 1976. She preceded him in death June 4, 2005.

Surviving a daughter, Kathleen (George) Nordman of Kalamazoo; a step-daughter, Theresa (Larry) Israels also of Kalamazoo; son-in-law, David (Debbie) Rife of Paw Paw; a brother, Richard (Dorthy) McCarthy of Cleveland, OH; 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Catherine and Charles McCarthy, his sister, Mildred, a daughter, Penny Rife, and a step-son, Don Whitt.

Cremation will take place and a memorial gathering will be held at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw on Tuesday, July 8 from 4-8 p.m. Private family interment with full military honors at Oak Grove Cemetery, Lawton. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
