The Swinehart Legend.
Once upon a time, in a remote deer camp in northern Michigan, there was a clever jokester by the name of Harry Heighton. I don't remember the exact year, but I must have been around ten years of age shen I visited this camp with my father, Steven J. Stozicki ("Uncle" Harry's devious accomplice), and my friend from church, Mike Shannon.
In the midst of enjoying the freedom of running wild (as boys are apt to do outside school walls), we were given stern warnings by Uncle Harry and my father. It may have been while we were enjoying Uncle Harry's famous (and secret) coney dog recipe that we were told of his evil and nefarious neighbors -- the Swineharts. Apparently, the Swineharts didn't take kindly to any other people in their neck of the woods. It wasn't unusual, in fact, for the Swineharts to shoot at anyone they perceived as trespassing on their turf.
I suppose it doesn't make much sense now, but we were nonetheless allowed then to explore the property with the simple instruction, "Be very careful." Sure enough, it wasn't long thereafter that my friend and I heard those despicable Swineharts trying to do us in. KABLAM! KAPOWIE! We were indeed surrounded by intermittent pot shots. Amazed (and perhaps a little terrified), we told Uncle Harry and my dad about what was going on. Is it safe? Should we leave? Were those nasty Swineharts going to do us in?
Well, no...we eventually learned that our two elders had cleverly wrapped firecrackers around a few of Uncle Harry's cigarettes. These improvised explosive devices would be set alight at various places on the property. Eventually, the cigarette burned down and ... KABLAM ... the Swinehart's gunshots were created.
It was a good laugh in the end and a good time had by all. My family and I extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of my Uncle Harry. Although I haven't seen Uncle Harry for many years, his jokes are fondly remembered, and I am sure he will be missed by those dear to him.
