Jean Flora Smith, 86, formally of Paw Paw, passed away April 10, 2009 at her home, surrounded by family. Jean was born July 24, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan the daughter of the late William and Flora (Cummerow) Bramwell. In 1946 she married Robert William Smith in Cheboygan, Michigan who preceded her in death in October of 1976. She was also preceded in death by her son, Scott Smith and stepson, David Smith. Jean is survived by five children, Danny and Yumiko (Ikeda) Smith, Gary and Yoshiko (Taya) Smith, Mark and Lynn (Reiter) Smith, Michael Smith and Joel Smith all of Jacksonville; stepdaughter, Trudy (John) McKinnon of Jenison, Michigan; six grandchildren, Lindsay Smith and Danial Smith of Paw Paw, Robert Smith and Neil Smith of Jacksonville, Matthew (Becky) McKinnon and Mark (Margaret) McKinnon of Jenison, Michigan; ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by her twin sister Betty McHargue of Key Largo, Florida and younger sister Marjorie Leonard of Gaylord, Michigan. During her lifetime, Jean was very active, a political conservative to the end. She previously worked as an Executive Secretary to the Director, Budget & Procedure Section of General Motors Corporation; Executive Secretary to the Director, Placement Bureau at Michigan State University; as School Secretary at the Cedar Street Elementary School, and for many years as Administrative Secretary to the Lakeview Community Hospital Administrator. Upon retirement she traveled extensively, making several trips to Japan to visit her sons who were stationed there, spending over a year on one trip. The family will receive friends Thursday, April 16th , 5 to 8 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw, where funeral services will be held Friday 11 a.m. with Rev. Mark Whittaker of Trinity Lutheran Church, Paw Paw officiating. In 2004, Jean moved to Jacksonville, Florida to be close to her sons, but her heart was always in Paw Paw. Jean will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw. A luncheon will follow the interment. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Michigan.

I was director of nursing at Lakeview and worked closely with Jean. She was a wonderful person, and provided me with her wisdom and guidance during that period. She is fondly remembered.
