Kay Don passed away Thursday morning August 27, 2009 at White Oaks Assisted Living in Lawton, following a lengthy illness and surrounded by loving family members. He was born in Kalamazoo on November 25, 1935 the son of Kenneth and Esther (Barratt) McKinley.
On February 18, 1966 he was united in marriage to Janice Gregory who preceded him in death on May 6, 2008. Kay Don was also preceded in death by his parents and a step-son Eddie Buskirk. Surviving Kay Don is a daughter Julie (Fred) Brauer, a step-son, Mark (Debbie) Buskirk and a step-daughter-in-law, Cheryl (Scott) Harvey. Additionally, he is survived by nine grandchildren: Bethany (Corey) Peterson, Sara Brauer, Matthew, Alexander and Andrew Buskirk, Juston Buskirk and Nicholas, Dexter and Shelby Harvey, and by four great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Betty (Kenneth) Kline of Marcellus and one brother Judson (Marie) McKinley of Kalamazoo, and many nieces and nephews.
Kay Don grew up in Kalamazoo and Paw Paw, graduating from Paw Paw High School and Western Michigan University. He completed a long and successful career with the United States Internal Revenue Service, working in Kalamazoo, New York and Washington, DC, returning to Paw Paw following his 1992 retirement from government service.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, Kay Don was devoted to his family and enjoyed participating in all of their activities. He was a strong, quiet and supportive person who touched many lives.
Kay Don was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Paw Paw. He loved his dog Shy and in his retirement he especially enjoyed bowling, golf and keeping a attractive yard.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Adams Funeral Home, 502 W. Michigan Avenue, Paw Paw. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 721 Pine Street, Paw Paw with burial to follow at Wildey Cemetery.
