1931 - 2006
On February 24, 1931 in the city of Huntington, West Virginia, the chimes of time rang out the news that Ronald Lorenzo Atkinson was born. He was the third child born to the late Horace and Anis Cradic Atkinson. At an early age Ronald accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at the Sixteenth Street Baptist. He received his education in the public schools of Cabell County, graduating from Douglass High School in the class of 1948. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the United States Army and was given an Honorable Discharge in 1954. Still wanting to serve his country he enlisted in the Army National Guard from which he retired in 1976 with the rank of Sergeant Major. In addition to his military career he worked several jobs, Huntington Job Corps Center, Manager of Rotary Gardens Apartments, the City of Huntington and other places of employment. Ronald had a great love for singing and was always willing to render a solo whenever asked. He was a former member and Deacon of the First Baptist of which he sang in the Choir. He will always be remembered as one of the two singing Deacons, singing, “God is so good to me” along with the late William Murrell while serving the Lord’s Supper. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 47. On Saturday, May 6, at 3:10PM in the emergency room of Cabell-Huntington Hospital the clock that started seventy-five years ago came to an end. Calling Ronald Lorenzo Atkinson to join his parents Horace and Anis, bothers, Melvin, Clinton and Richard, sister Betty Jean and other family and friends who preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memories: Two sisters; Delores Hollman, Maple Heights, Ohio and Ruth Ann Atkinson, Paramount, Cal. One brother Wayne Martin, Huntington, WV and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will be Thursday, May 11, at First Baptist Church with the Reverend Paul F. Willis, officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:-8:00pm Wednesday at Callender Funeral Home.

I am deeply saddened and will miss my friend Ronald Atkinson. Ronald was one of a kind: someone you would like to have at least one more conversation with before God calls them to reward. A vibrant personality! Rest in peace.

To the family of Ron Atkinson,
Before I ever had my driver's license I used to come downtown with my grandmother. We usually parked in the lot next to Glenn's Sporting Goods. Ron worked as a lot attendant during the late 70's and most of the 80's that I recall. Normally I wouldn't remember someone who gave me a stub and told me where to park, but Ron was very different. He went out of his way to be polite and friendly, to the point that I felt like he was a friend. For years, every time I came downtown I would see him and he always went out of his way to strike up a conversation. He was enthusiastic about his job and he represented the city very well.
I probably hadn't see him since the late 80's, but I still remembered him. A couple of years ago I bumped into him at the Kroger Grocery Store. He recognized me right away and came over to speak to me like we had been neighbors. I was really impressed that a man who didn't really know me or my name, would remember me from the parking lot and would take the time to come over and speak to me! I wish that there were more people who treated their fellow man this way.
I was extremely sorry to see his obituary and I wanted to share this story with his family and loved ones.
He will be missed.
