I had the privilege of working with Doc many years ago at General Motors. I was assigned to Doc as a millwright apprentice. He taught me many things about maintenance, and more important about life. He was a mentor and a friend. He sang Christian songs while we worked installing and maintaining the manufacturing equipment. The song he sang most often was "This Old House". One of the first things that Doc taught me was how to tie a bowline knot around my waist..behind my back with my eyes closed! He said it was a safety measure noting that someday I might be trapped in an accident with only one hand and arm functioning and in the dark. If someone threw me a rope (or if I had one) I could save my life. He worked with me for an hour..and we succeeded in being able to do it with either hand. I have since taught my children and grandchildren. THANKS DOC. He told me that I was the only person he ever trusted to give a key to the padlock for his toolbox of expensive tools. I still have it to this day. All of this happened 46 years ago! The memories hold strong. I was laid off the day after receiving journeyman status. GM was having a very bad year with the Nova sales. Doc and I kept in touch for awhile then as life would have it we drifted apart. But...I have never forgotten him, still have his GM picture and cherished memories of one of the finest and most patient men I have ever known. I tear up when I think of all we shared when I was only 20-21 years old. I'm so glad to know that he was a Christian, loved Jesus and is in his heavenly home. God Bless you all....Joe Cotter ...
