
Sara Elizabeth Rice, 94, of Louisa, went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 20, 2012 at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, KY.
Born April 11, 1917, in Louisa, she was the daughter of the late Emma Short Rice and David Elijah Rice. She was a graduate of Marshall University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. Sara was a Lawrence County Schools teacher for 41 years, teaching at Fallsburg Elementary and at Deephole and Yatesville one-room schools.
Sara worked with the 4-H Club for many years, receiving the Kentucky 4-H Centennial Hall of Fame Award in 2009. She considered all of her former students and 4-H members her children. She loved to sew and many of her 4-Hers learned sewing from Sara.
She was a member of Myrtle Chapel Church, where she taught the Beginners Youth Sunday School class and served as church secretary and treasurer for many years.
She selflessly cared for others and always offered support to family and friends, encouraging them to become the best that they could be. Sara was loved by many for her work and willingness to help others in the Fallsburg community. She received the WSAZ Hometown Hero award in 1999.
Sara was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Lawrence County Education Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Moore; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, David (Emma Elizabeth) Rice, Thomas (Elizabeth) Rice, James French (Laura) Rice, and Jackie Rice; and a nephew, David Eli Moore.
Survivors include a brother, Jack Rice of Fallsburg; a brother-in-law, Ralph Moore of Louisa; seven nieces, Susan Gipson, Linda Beth Ferguson, Joyce Burton, Wanda Blevins, Marsha Shannon, Debra Savage Rice, and Sara Elizabeth Penny Rice; and eight nephews, Paul Rice, Carl Rice, Richard Rice, Donald Rice, Herb Rice, Joe Rice, Randy Savage Rice, and Gregory Rice; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 23 at Wilson Funeral Home, 1270 Highway 2565, Louisa, KY from 4:30-9:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held at Myrtle Chapel Church on Friday, February 24 at 2:00 pm with the Reverend Clifford Austin officiating. Interment will be at the Clem Short Cemetery.
