Mary Frances Chapman, 86 of Ashton, WV, went home to be with the Lord on September 20, 2024 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House. Mary was a member of Balls Chapel Church since 1962 where she served as Sunday School secretary for 40 plus years as well as other offices in the church. Mary was a faithful dedicated member of the church and she loved her church family. Mary was also a member of the West Virginia Grand Chapter Order of The Eastern Star, Milton Chapter 149. Mary was a 1956 graduate of Hannan High School and she managed and operated the family business, Hughes Grocery for 20 years.
Mary is the daughter of the late John Franklin and Stella Marie Hughes. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Troy Lee Chapman, two sisters and three brothers-in-law, Rosalie Ball (Joe), Opal Leadman (Denzel) and Leland Starkey, one brother Jimmie Lee Hughes and a special niece Connie Sue Chapman.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Robert Lee Chapman, one daughter, Crystal Plybon and her husband Bobby, two grandchildren, Troy “Mo” Plybon and Emma Marie Plybon, all of Ashton, WV, one sister, Evelyn Starkey of Glenwood WV, brothers, Bill Hughes (Margaret) of Gallipolis Ferry, WV, Johnny Hughes (Judy) of Point Pleasant, WV, Rich Hughes (Terri), of Murrells Inlet, SC and one sister-in-law, Glenva Hughes, of Ashton, WV. She also leaves behind a special niece, Kellie Poore (Robbie) who helped care for her during her illness, her best friend for many years, Judy Perry, Angie Holley, who she loved like her daughter, and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews who loved their Mare Mare. Mary also leaves behind her church family and countless others who loved her dearly and called her Mother Mary.
Funeral services will be conducted at Balls Chapel Church on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Darren Ellis and Pastor Bob Withers officiating, burial will follow in Balls Chapel Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, WV from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 and after 12 p.m. Thursday at the church.
