CSM Raines - You were such a fantastic leader when I had you as a 1SG at DLI. We still talk about you constantly. Leadership like yours is rare and if all 1SGs and CSMs were like you, it is highly likely I'd still be on Active Duty status. You helped change my life and I'm so grateful for that. You leave a legacy and you are a hero! Very Respectfully, SGT Coomer

Please accept, on behalf of the Alicea-Rivera family, our deepest condolences. As military life would have it, CSM Raines and I served in many of the same places but at different times. Nonetheless, he is, by virtue of his service, one of our brothers. May he rest in peace and may God bless the family with peace of heart and strength.

My deepest and heartfelt condolences to all surviving members of Chris's family. The news came as a great shock. Chris was a wonderful friend and confidant to me in high school, and someone I always looked up to. I admired his strength and fortitude, but above all his innate kindness, humility, and fairness to all. If only 5% of the world had the same selfless and benevolent spirit as Chris possessed we would all be living in a much better place. Go in peace my friend, you will be missed.

To the family, my prayers are with you. May joyful memories brighten your days to come. To Chris, you have always been my motivation to be the best Noncommissioned Officer I can be. As a Private at my first duty station, you were the First Sergeant who showed me what it meant to take care of Soldiers. Your mentorship from the first day on has stuck with me more than any other. The Commander of all has at His side, the greatest CSM I have ever known. May God Bless your soul and Bless the lives of your family throughout their journey until you meet again.

Chris, What can I say that hasn't already been said 100 times? I owe so much to you for your leadership and guidance that has helped me preserve in the real world as much as it did as your "ops" Sergeant when I served under you in the 82nd. I am proud to have known you personally and professionally. Tell St. Peter to keep his feet an knees together.

Chris Raines is a name that will be spoken of highly be me forever. He was a great guy. I'm going to miss him. To his family, I'm so sorry for your loss, but you can know that Chris helped me and many, many others with great advice about life and he set a great example by the way he lived. Carolyn and Huck. Chris was truely one of toughest guys I have ever known. If Coach Akers asked someone to run through a brick wall. Chris would be first in line! He was a great inspiration to us all. Our class reunion was not the same without Chris last year. He will be greatly missed by the class of 79 and all of his friends. I am sorry I am not in town to attend the memorial service. Take care, Brian

I don't know if friend is the right word. Whatever you call those people who set the standards that you know you have to meet - and make you better than you would have been otherwise - He is that.

To all of Chris' family and friends, Heart felt condolences go out to you all. His untimely death was certainly a shock to us all. I met Chris while attending an Army course here at Ft Meade back in the early 90s. It was so easy to be drawn to his no-nonsense personality, great sense of humor, and overall love of life. He, Joe Boutte and I had some great times together in the short period of times our lives crossed paths. Until we meet again, Chris...
