Verabel was my second-grade teacher at North Ward School, Urbana,(1954) and she would sometimes entertain our class with stories about her family living on Route 29. So many years ago! Some of us still retain those school memories of special teachers like Verabel. Honoring her memory, Kelly Milledge.

To the family of Verabel, I met Verabel at Hearth and Home when I went there to do church services. I remember how she loved to play the piano for our services and was so upset when her eyesight got bad enough that she couldn't see well enough to play. I also remember her and I discussing my sermons and how she told me that I usually had a good point to them, but sometimes I took awhile to get around to it. What a way to tell a person he is long winded. That was Verabel. Kind even in her insults. I will miss her and her smile and her concern always for others. She was God's and my kind of woman. May God be with you on this day of sorrow. Bob Heitman
