He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wanda Stanley Gillette; a son, Steve (Shona) of Polson, Montana; a daughter; two grandsons, Tyler Gillette and Bret McCartney; two sisters, May Evelyn Hunt and Roberta Erickson, and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Dot Molter and Rosalie Bailes, and his brother Harold Gillette. Don graduated from Rome High School in 1941. He served as a bus driver for the Fairland School District, retiring after 38 years. He was well known in the community for his sense of humor, his patriotism, and the sweet corn, apples, and produce that he raised and sold at his roadside farm market. He was a member of the Highlawn Baptist Church, the VFW Post #6878 in Proctorville, where he served on the Honor Guard, the Rome Cemetery Board, Hecla Water Association Board of Directors, and the Ohio Farm Bureau. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 4, from 6-8:30 PM at Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 5, at 11AM at Hall Funeral Home by Pastor Jim Franklin and Pastor Ricky Ray. Burial will follow in Rome Cemetery in Proctorville. I am so sorry to hear Mr Gillette has passed. I grew up in the Rome area, and he was always a fair and happy man. I could not wait every year for his vegetables. To the person who put the memorial for him at the place where he always had his stand,I would like to say THANK YOU. It is a very fitting tribute and beautiful. Thank you Mrs. Gillette for sharing him all these years.

Mrs. Gillette I am sorry for your loss of a GREAT MAN in the Proctorville and Fairland community. Reading these messages shows the respect Don had in his life. From being a safe bus driver to growning the best veggies and working hard, to being a upstanding member of a strong and growning community. Thank you for a wonderful partnership sharing with us all.

I am very saddened to hear about Mr. Gillette's passing. I remember standing outside his bus at age six not wanting to get on it my first day of school. He looked over at me and said son alot of people have felt the same way you feel right now. Now , nearly thirty years later , alot of people are feeling the same , we all feel the loss of a good man , a good example and a good driver who held alot of young lives within his capable grasp. I will always remember him going out of his way to make a six year old boy feel better about his first day of school.

All four of us Callicoat kids rode to school on old No. 5 back in the sixties, and had a great man serving as our school bus driver. I can also remember summertimes and seeing Mr. Gillette on the tractor out in the fields behind our house, bailing hay for our neighbor Jay Maynard. Although busy, he would always stop to say hi. Great memories of a great man. We share in your loss and keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

It is so hard to loss a man of such great character. Sometimes in life and in death we just have to trust what God has planned. For me it eases my heart to think of the great times I spent with Mr. Gillette. You knew that you could always count on him. I did not give it much thought until now but as a student every morning I would leave my house and know that bus # 5 would be there. Never late and always as warm or as cool as possible. As I got older I had the privilege to get to ride with him in the evening to and from sporting events. Again always there and never late. You would think that after I graduated that I would not have to depend on a bus driver anymore but not in Mr. Gillettes case. I could always depend on him at the side of the road with that silver queen. Out early in the morning picking it fresh and standing in the heat of the day so I could have my corn. Mrs. Gillette I have always felt that this world works better in pairs. He was very fortunate to have two Queens in his life you his first and Silver as his second. I wish that I could say something that would make your heart lighter but I just do not have the words those you will have to get from the man upstairs. I would like to thank you from the students of Fairland for sharing him with us. You are in my prayers Harry Stiltner

Dear Wanda and Members of the Gillette Family, I wanted to offer my sincere sympathy and condolences to you upon the passing of Mr. Donald Gillette. The community has lost no truer friend. When Stephanie Burcham shared the news with me today, my memory went back to a time prior to the construction of the OU Proctorville Center, when Mr. Gillette not only led the charge for a VFW fund raising event (pig roast)for the Center, but was always there to lend whatever VFW support and assistance was needed for a variety of Center-related activities. Mr. Gillette (and I should include Wanda in this statement) envisioned the benefit that the Proctorville Center could bring to his community. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We only had a brief time to personally get to know Don when he came to Montana and spent a day with us. Steve told me what a great time Don had touring the farms and ranches in central Montana. Don shared himself with me that day, his memories of a life well lived. It is a day I will always cherish. Looks like our Lord made a fine choice to take care of his garden in heaven.
