Dear Gabriella and Richard,
I am so very sorry for your loss, but I wanted you to read a bit about your grandmother and how she helped me before you both were born. Oh do I have stories of your father too.
I loved Mrs. Holten very much. The loss of such a wonderful person, no words can describe. I met Mrs. Hilton when I had moved to WV from VT and landed at Guyan Valley. I was a lost and very sad duck and I believe she knew it. I had History with her my sophomore year and watched as after Christmas break, Mrs. Holten came back as a glamour girl. She had changed everything about her and we all noticed. It was a good look. All of us were, “Oh my goodness, she is gorgeous!”
Mrs. Holton started the Fine Arts Society, Club, I think for me because no one would allow me to join any club at GVHS because I was not “one of them.” Mrs. Holton was so intuitive and had such a soft heart. I loved talking to her. My mom and I would visit her every time I came home. She gave me an autographed copy of her published book. I took every class she offered at GVHS. I think the best class was Literature, we were not censored and read quite an array of genres.
She was so thrilled when she found out that I had gone into the field of teaching and Special Education. She was an inspiration and I told her so.
My last visit with her was when her husband, Ray, was ill. Ray at that time remembered my mom, Jean. We had a wonderful conversation and I remembered telling her she hadn’t changed a bit at all. She gauffed and said she had, but in my eyes she was just as beautiful as she was the day God allowed me the blessings of our paths meeting. Mrs. Holton, it has taken me a while to write this to you. I shall always remember you in my mind and heart. You did your job as a teacher and mentor. God has gained a beautiful angel and I shall always miss a wonderful friend. You shall never be forgotten. Love always…Maria

I think I spent time with Mr. and Mrs. Holten. I used to volunteer for Red Cross in Huntington. We would drive the ERV ( emergency relief vehicle). I would go out and do disaster assessment for the local chapter.
Sorry for your loss.
