1935 - 2025
In the afternoon of Monday, February 24, 2025, IRENE J. SMITH, age 89, departed this earth and entered her eternal home of heaven to be with her Lord and Savior. Irene was born on November 7, 1935, to the late Shannon and Belva Perdue Taylor. She graduated from Barboursville High School in 1953, was named the first Homecoming Queen for Barboursville High School and during that same year, married her high school sweetheart, Ernie Smith, whom she was married to for 64 years. We know Ernie is now celebrating her joining him in heaven at this very moment. Irene spent her early years working and raising her family in the surrounding area of Lesage, WV, where she was employed by Cabell County Schools, serving as school secretary, as well as classroom aide. Irene was an active member of Ashton Baptist Church, cherishing the relationships she had with her extended church family. During these past few years, Irene was blessed to call The Village at Riverview her home where she was welcomed and loved by the residents and amazing staff who cared for her. Preceding Irene in her passing are two brothers, Shannon Taylor, Robert (Cheryl) Taylor; one sister Sally Jo Midkiff; and a great-granddaughter, Sophia Thompson. Irene is survived by her children, one daughter and son-in-law, Rosanna (Rod) Pruett of Winston-Salem, N.C., three sons and daughters-in-law, Brent (Lisa) Smith of Barboursville, Mark (Patty) Smith of Huntington, Matt (Debbie) Smith of Culloden; grandchildren and spouses, Shannon (Jamie) Smith, Brad Smith, Melanie (Laban) Thompson, Brandon (Kelly) Smith, Lauren (Andrew) Thompson, Kaitlin (Ernst) van den Berg, Adam (Morgan) Pruett and Samuel (Amanda) Pruett; and great-grandchildren, Caleb, Katerina, Kayley, Taylor, Savannah, Braelyn, Tate, Tucker, Tripp, Mila, Griffin, and Alex. In addition, she is survived by her sister Vivian (Rob) Davis, brother-in-law Don Midkiff, along with a large host of extended family members too numerous to list. Irene was a woman of strong faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ's love and the beauty and peace that she knew awaited her in her heavenly home. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends who celebrate in knowing she is rejoicing in heaven with her Lord and Savior. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, WV, officiated by Pastor Gordon Rutherford. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/wallace.

To All the Family: We love you all and are thinking about you during this time of Irene's passing but know she is in the presence of the Lord. We pray that the Peace that passes all understanding rests in you hearts. She was a beautiful person inside and out and she and Ernie raised a wonderful family. You are all truly blessed by the legacy your mom and dad left to be carried on through generations. Cherish the wonderful memories.

Dear Rosanna,
I am praying for you and your brothers. I saw Irene in the hospital recently. She felt that her illness (pneumonia) was improving. She smiled as we chatted. I prayed with her.
She was released before my next visit.
I always appreciated how her room at The Village was so homey. She was content whether we met in her room or the dining room.
Thank you for how well you honored your mother.
I rejoice that she is with Jesus and Ernie.
Love an prayers,
Brian

Mr. and Mrs. Smith are the couple that remains the fondest in my memories. Mr. Smith was my bus driver all through Elementary school and Mrs. Smith was our Elementary school secretary. She always had a kind word and a gentle heart. They are both now at home with Jesus enjoying a grand reunion. Much love and prayers for their family.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. Her picture is beautiful, just how I remember her. She was one of the kindest, sweetest women I have ever known and I know how very sad you are of her passing but resting in the knowledge that she was welcomed into heaven by Jesus and your dad. I loved them both! My prayers are with all of you!
