1939 - 2026

Gene Randall RhoadesGene Randall Rhoades, 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 4, 2026—twenty-nine years to the day after the passing of his beloved wife, Brenda K. Rhoades, a date that held deep meaning for him throughout his life.

Born March 12, 1939, in Huntington, West Virginia, Randall was the son of the late Morris E. Rhoades and Virginia E. Rhoades. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife Brenda; his brothers John and Clinton; and his sisters Janice and Shirley.

Randall’s work ethic and determination were evident from a young age. He began by setting pins at a local bowling alley and later worked at Anderson Newcomb. His professional path changed when he joined Smith Barney Harris Upham & Co., where he manually updated stock prices on the ticker board. His knowledge and steady presence soon led him to provide stock market closing updates on a local news station.

Randall passed both the NASD and NYSE exams, beginning a distinguished almost 50 year career as a Financial Advisor. Over the decades, he served clients with dedication at both Smith Barney and Merrill Lynch, earning numerous awards and the respect of colleagues and clients alike. He retired as First Vice President, Investments from Merrill Lynch, a testament to his commitment, integrity, and expertise.

After the passing of his wife, Randall remained deeply engaged in his community. He served as Chairman of the Board of the Hospitality House in Huntington and as a member of the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation Board. Each September, he faithfully manned the tent selling flags for the Healing Field at Spring Hill Cemetery and played an instrumental role in the placement of the Bell Tower 9/11 Memorial there. His service also included time as President of the local Moose Lodge, Board Member of the Huntington Wall of Fame, and supporter of the Huntington Arena Football League. Randall was honored as a Kentucky Colonel and appointed a West Virginia Centennial Colonel, recognitions he accepted with humility.

He also enjoyed following his favorite sports and pastimes, especially baseball, boxing and horse racing, and looked forward to his monthly class reunion luncheons at Olive Garden.

Randall is survived by his children: Rhonda (Lee) Thoman of Proctorville, Ohio; Randy (Lisa) Rhoades of Huntington, WV; and Ryan Rhoades of Chesapeake, Ohio. He also leaves behind six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

Though his life was filled with accomplishments, service, and recognition, Randall would want to be remembered most simply as Brenda’s husband—a role he cherished above all others.

Randall will be laid to rest beside his beloved Brenda at Spring Hill Cemetery. Wallace Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Services are private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Huntington and the Ronald McDonald House of Huntington.
