In loving memory of Dawn Surya
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Dawn M. Surya, our beloved Mama and Oma, who entered into eternal rest on October 31, 2026 at the age of 71. Her joyful spirit, warmth, love, and devotion to her family will be forever cherished. She filled our lives with laughter and her bright energy will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.
Born in North Carolina to Michael C. and Martha F. Schneider; Dawn grew up in Indiana and Pennsylvania. After graduation from Geneva College (Beaver Falls, PA) she started working as a medical technologist in Richwood, WV where she met and married her husband. Together they moved to Huntington, WV and in 1982 Dawn graduated from the Marshall University School of Nursing.
Between working and taking care of family members, she found time for baking, church, gardening, flowers, and stray cats.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Djohn Surya. Dawn is survived by her brother Michael G. Schneider of Stone Mountain, GA and his wife Cheri and their four children Charis, Jonathan, Christopher, and Constance; as well as her stepdaughter Jonda Bland of Houston, TX and her husband Mark and Jonda’s son Dylan Marshall, also of Houston, TX.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her beautiful life on Friday, November 20, 2026 with services held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1304 6th Ave, Huntington, WV 25701. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m., followed by a graveside internment of ashes.
