Helen Ruth Nayer Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1915 - 2005

Helen Ruth Rainey Nayer of Kerrville, Texas passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005 after several years of debilitating illness. She was born on Jan. 11, 1915 in Van Zandt County, Texas to Albert Rainey and Helen Wilson Rainey. The family lived in several Texas communities and Helen graduated from Yoakum High School in 1932. When the family moved to San Marcos, Helen graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1936. Her first job was teaching Physical Education at a small high School near Alice, Texas. She left teaching to serve as a legal secretary in Corpus Christi to a member of the Kleberg family of the King Ranch. After World War II she met her husband Frank "Pancho" Nayer and they moved to San Antonio, Texas where she reentered the teaching profession at Fox Tech High School. When she and Pancho retired in 1965 they moved to Kerrville, Texas and became frequent trailer travelers visiting the Gulf Coast and the far West. When not in residence at Three Hills Mobile Home Park, Helen and her husband, were traveling and attending Elder Hostel programs arouund the country. Helen's favorites always centered around art. She enjoyed painting landscapes and in reccent years blessed many friends with her "sun catchers." An especially proud moment was the winning of a contest which enabled Helen to have coffee with Fred Gipson, local author of the classic "Old Yeller." She was also proud of "her" team the San Antonio Spurs. Helen never missed watching a game, nor the opportunity to decorate her walls with Spur headlines and pictures. It is said that she even organized pep rallies for "her" team. Helen was a people person and gave herself to the community and friends in numerous ways. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the 20th Century Sunday School Class. She has been recognized for giving hundreds of hours of service too Friends of Hospice, the Dietert Claim, and the formerly known as Cowboy Artist's of America Museum, and to viiting shut-ins. Helen will be missed by family and friends for the joy she shared, for her spunk, and delightful dry wit. She taught us all about love, grace and kindness. Preceding her in death were Helen's husband Frank Nayer, brothers Frank W. Rainey of San Antonio, Texas and Gordon W. Rainey of Taylor, Texas. She is survived by her brother; A. Gerald Rainney of Timberville, Virginia and seven nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be 2pm, Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2005 at Hilltop Chapel in Kerrville, Texas with Pastor Warren Hornung officating the services. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to First United Methodist Church, Friends of Hospice, or the charity of your choice.
