Sherrell Hurst Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1923 - 2006

Sherrell HurstSherril Hurst at the age of 82 passed away Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006 at the Kerrville, Texas VA hospital. He was born on March 18, 1923 in Tipptonville, Tennessee to Mansol and Margaret "McQuerter" Hurst. Sherrell had 4 brothers and 1 sister, all preceding him in death. He met and married Irene Smith on December 12, 1942 in Kerrville, Texas. Irene passed away on March 11, 2004, they had been married 61 years. Sherrell had a gift for music, playing the fuitar and harmonica and never had a lesson. When he was younger, his brother Smokey and other friends had a band that they would play at the VFW hall and other locations. He was the story teller of the family, he always had a story about something, from the war to growing up during the depression. Sherrell and his brothers kept his Mama busy. He was offered a scholarship at Schreiner Institute to play basketball but as soon as he heard about Pearl Harbor, he signed up to join the U.S. Army. After, the war he went to night school to become a carpenter. He build or remodeled houses around the Hill Country. He loved to fish and camp out, especially with his grandchildren. Every morning, he would make his famous "Cowboy Tators" and no matter how hard you tried to make them, they never came out as good as Papas. One of his passions was digging for arrowheads, over the years he found several rare arrowheads. He could spot the mounds, any where, even while driving down the road. We remember Daddy most of all as a gentleman- with a great sense of humor. He is survived by his loving children, Joe Hurst of Kerrville, Texas, Gary Hurst of Center Point,Texas, Sharie Marquart and husband James of Comfort, Texas; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He will be loved and missed by many loved ones and friends. Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006 from 4 to 6 pm at Wright's Funeral Parlor. Fuenral Services will be held 2pm Monday, Feb. 13, 2006 at Wright's Funeral Parlor. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery with full military honors. Pallbearers will be Jim Bob, Keith, Jarrett and James Marquart, John Murray, Randy Eckhardt and Billy Hurst.

Shaire, Gary & Joe, Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. One of my favorite reccolections of your dad was him sqating down on the side of the Guadalupe River bridge near Legion Hospital. He had a little stick with some thread on it and a minow hook. He was using bread, trying to catch some minows, so we (at that time in elementary school) could use the minows to fish for BIG fish. That big man and that little stick and hook, showing us how to live and enjoy life. Even though we are not there with you today, feel our hugs and handshakes. Jim & Lou McCoy
