1919 - 2006
 Emerson C. Garling at the age of 87 passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at the home of his daughter- Elsie Mae Shorter, with whom he made his home since 1985, the family moved to Bandera, Texas in 1995. He fought a long battle against pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure and was cared for at home with the help of Vista Care Hosice program . Mr Garling was born on March 06, 1919 in Fairport, New York to Charles Garling and Leora (Dickinson) Garling. His father died in November before he was born. He attended Clifton Springs Central School then started working as a movie projectionist in Geneva, NY and was a nember of LATSE Local #102. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. Where he was stationed in Papua, New Guinea with the Army Corps of Engineers. They were in charge of building roadways, landing strips and piers for staging combat assults against Pacific corridor. Plus he was the company projectionist and photographer. Following his discharge from the Army with a rank of Staff Sergeant he worked at the Republic Steel Company in Cleveland, Ohio before moving back to Geneva, NY. While he was again a projectionist and also worked for Geneva Paper Company. Mr Garling moved from Geneva, NY to San Jose, CA in 1964 and was in LATSE Local #431. After 47 years he retired in 1982 and moved to Sonora, CA. He jouned the local Cedar Ridge Volunteer Fire Department and was the equiptment officer and also drove the snow plow. His other hobbies included gardening, cooking, photography, traveling, doing cement work, and just puttering and staying busy. Cactus, yellow roses and gardenias were his favorites. Cats were the biggest part of his life. He enjoyed them and they stayed with him during his final days keeping him warm and at peace. One of his greatest satisfactions was being reunited with his two older sisters. In 1923 his oldest sister Viola Dorothy was put on an orphan train and set to New York City. She was later adopted in the Finger Lakes region. Elsie contracted numerous sites trying to locate her. She was found in 1990 and came to Conneaut, Ohio; Marie came from Florida and the three were reunited. Then they traveled to Clyde, New York where another reunion was made with the remaining five brothers and sisters. This reunion was published in 1992 Family Circle magazine as one of the Children Aid Societies greatest family reunions through the efforts of Helen Steiner.
He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Leora Garling, first wife Vivian M. Duhaime (mother of his daughter), second wife Doris M. Washburn Garling (mother of his three sons), son Robert Paul Garling, grandson Harry W. Garling Jr, three sisters Viola Dorothy Call, Bloomington, CA, Marie Fox Palm Harbor, FL, Esther Atkinson Phelps, NY, brother William Kesel Phelps, NY.
Mr Garling is survived by his daughter Elsie and husband Michael Shorter of Bandera, Texas, two sons Charles Clifton Garling Jr of Springs, NY. and Harry and wife Barbara Garling of Newark, NY. sisters Betty Jane and husband Frank Palermo of Newark, NY; two brothers David Kesel and Robert Clapton both of Clifton Springs, NY; five grandchildren Bobbie Jo Halladay and wife Lonnie, Tara Payne, Charles E. Garling II, Jason Garling, and Justin Garling; six great grandchildren plus numerous nieces and nephews and friends who loved him will miss him.
His wish was to be cremated with on services. In lieu of flowers he would like to have donations made in his name to the following animal rescue;
