Ira Cecil Murphy at the age of 90 passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at a Kerrville, Texas care center. He was born on April 7, 1916 in Florien, Louisiana to Ernest Murphy and Martha Miller Murphy. He was from Fallon, Nevada from 1978 till 2006. Ira served in the U.S. Navy from 1940 till 1956 and then he retired as a CWO, W-3. He spent 211 years in the Navy surviving the sinking of the USS Bismarck Sea off of Iwa Jina. After military retirement he worked for LockHeed's Missle program in Sunnyvale, California. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Navy League, Fleet Reserve Association, and Veteran of Foriegn Wars. There was a article in the Scene magazine about the brave services of Ira Murphy "The men in the inner-communications room stuck to their stations until they were sure that every phone had ackowledged the word to abandon ship. One man I know about, Warrant Electrician I.C. Murphy, USN, stayed beyond all bounds of personal safety to see that all stations below decks got the word. The electrician's mates kept the generators running by holding in the switches and other devices. By skillful manipulation of the electrical apparatus they kept the lighting on so that everone below decks could get out".
He is preceded in death by his parents Ernest & Martha Murphy, his wife Mary Margaret.and one brother Ernest Albert Murphy Jr.
Ira is survived by his sister Martra Eades of Kerrville, Texas; four brothers Kenneth Murphy of Dry Prong, Louisiana, Dwane Murphy, Michael Murphy and Stephen Murphy all of Natchitoches, Louisiana; 18 neices and nephews and 32 great neices and nephews many other family members who love him will miss him.
Military honors graveside services will be held 2:30 pm, Monday, June 26, 2006 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
