Howard George Perkins at the age of 87 passed away on Friday, January 26, 2007 at a Kerrville, Texas hospital. He was born on March 7, 1919 in Hackberry, Texas to George Perkins and Susie O'Bryant Perkins, pioneer ranchers of the Nueces Canyon, Rocksprings and the San Angelo areas. Howard worked in construction with heavy equipment for Brown & Root many years. He was a member of the House of Prayer in Ingram, Texas. Howard lived in Pearl City, Hawaii for many years where he raised his children and was involved in rebuilding Pearl Harbor at the beginning of World War II. He was one of the people to help build the VA hospital in Pearl City, Hawaii. He participated in construction on different islands in the South Pacific. He also lived in Thailand for several years. He was a resident of Kerrville and Ingram for the past 35 years. Howard was called "Cactus Howard" because of his innovative creation of cutting cactus leaves into different designs and then rooting them and growing them into plants. He was also active in growing orchids and other tropicals while living in Hawaii. Howard was also known to the community for his kindness and generosity. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Howard is survived by his son Randy Perkins and wife Kathy of Otisville, Maine; daughter Pamela Cody husband Tom of San Francisco, California; 3 sisters Gwen Carlow of Kerrville, Texas, Evelyn (Bunny) Smith Parkins of Houston, Texas and Nelva Reed and husband Sam of San Antonio; brother Leo Perkins and wife Lillian of Lampasas, Texas; 3 grandchildren David Perkins of Northbridge, Massachusetts and Daniel Perkins of Limington, Maine and Tiffany Chase of San Francisco, California; 6 great grandchildren Evan and Michaela Perkins of Northrbridge, Massachusetts, Daniel Jr., Hannah and Catilyn Perkins of Limington, Maine and Marcus Chase of San Francisco, California; numerous nieces and nephews and many other family members and friends who love him will miss him.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007 at Wright's Funeral Parlor in Kerrville, Texas the family will greet guest from 5pm till 7pm.
Funeral services will be held 10 am., Friday, Feb. 2, 2007 at Wright's Funeral Parlor (1913 Junction Hwy. Kerrville, Texas 78028) with Pastor officiating the services. Interment will follow at Nichols Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be granddaughter Tiffany Chase, grandson, Daniel Perkins, niece Sarah Smith, nephews Mark Smith, Robert (Bob) Smith, Sammie Reed, Larry Reed and niece Dr. Caroly Black.
