1923 - 2007

Gene A. Schafer at the age of 83 passed away on Friday, May 4, 2007 at a local care center after a brief illness. His parents were Bismarck Schafer and Genevieve Carter Schafer of Garden City, Texas. He was born on Aug. 31, 1923 in Chicago, Ill. to Bismarck Schafer and Genevieve (Carter) Schafer but considered himself a native of Garden City, having moved there at an early age. He attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Gene's careers spanned from ranching to international oil field engineering. He lived in much of the Western United States, Iran, Greece, Italy, Singapore and Mexico. Gene had a wide range of interests from geology, paleontology, genealogy and Texas history. His family always delighted in his quirky sense of humor. He is preceded in death by his parents. Gene will be miss by his long time companion Edna Summers Mixon of Kerrville, Texas; children Phillip Brant Schafer of Elgin, Texas, Suanne Schafer husband Robert Bambic of San Antonio, Texas; brother Marck Schafer and wife Dana of Garden City, Texas; sister Joyce Fuller of Big Springs, Texas; 1 grandson Max Schafer-Bambic; nieces, nephews Todd, Danetta Schafer of Garden City, Texas and Linda, Sabra and William of Big Springs, Texas and many other family members and friends who love him will miss him. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, May 12, 2007 at the Rio Robles trailer park recreation hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Peterson Hospice, 1121 Broadway, Kerrville, Texas 78028.
