I have been searching for Rusty many years. Sad to find this. We bunked and worked together at Keesler AFB. He was a talented artist and guitar picker. We visited his family once while still in the AF. He liked to play shoot-em up with real 22 pistols. I will never forget him. Please pass this on to his family.

I had been searching for Rusty at the end of last year, he was on my mind. I had called and called and no answer. Friends since the early seventies we have stayed in touch over all these years. I would be homesick and leave him a message. He would call back and sing a cowboy lulliby on my machine. A good friend. A sad loss. Happy trails...

I found this on March 11, while searching for an email address to wish him happy birthday. I wish I had seen this in time to send pictures. I have loved Rusty since 1969. He was a great friend. For a few years, his family was like my own. They were always wonderful. Although I only saw him sporadically,we talked a few times a year and he remained an important part of my life. He always made me feel good, welcome where ever he was and greatly valued. I have so many memories...riding horses with him in Windwood, or should I say riding with Teddy Roosevelt(I was the beautiful school teacher); also the zebra truck, the art, the songs, the movies, the Y-O,the sparkle in his eye and his love for life. So much more... There is a hole in my life now, but I was so blessed to know him. I agree the Lord must have needed entertainment. May Rusty rest in peace.

I was saddened to hear the news. Rusty always made me smile. I've always said that a persons life is not complete until you've met someone like Rusty. Goodbye ol' pal. You will be sorely missed. Via con Dios.

Rusty is one the reasons we are in Texas instead of NM. He asked Larry to do some work for him in Harper and we love the area and the sensible people here, that we got to Texas to live as fast as we could. Rusty was a good Amigo and we will miss him.

I have known Rusty since 1974. We had a few wild times together. He was the best still-life artist I believe I will ever have known. He lived to love and loved to live. Rest in peace my friend.

I first met Russ in 1971 or so I was in high school. I remember his humor and the 1946 chevy panel truck with Needmore Land and Cattle Company painted by him with his great western flair on the side. I seem to recall a white chevy truck painted like a zebra. And of course the music.

My family has been a friend of the Cox's for years. As far back as I can remember from the time they lived in Tomball. When Russ left for hollywood to film The Wind and the Lion it was the last time I seen him til he popped up on the Sackett's. There was no mistaking Russ when he popped up on screen. I had moved off to Alaska and lost touch. In 2007 I had the opportunity to get re-aquainted with Russ again at his home in Harper and my youngest daughter had the great pleasure to meet someone I had talked about for years and he gave us the tour of his warehouse as well. I have a few pictures of Russ when I was growing up but my parents have more. Several memories though, and one stands out when he babysat me one night and wrapped me in masking tape like a mummy to surprise my mom and dad when they returned home. Unfortunately I had to go to the restroom and Russ frantically unwrapped me. I also remember my mom and dad having a New Years eve party back in the early 70's and Russ showed up in all his western gear wearing his colt 45's and had a shoot out with my dad right there in the house using blanks of course but no one knew it. Russ fell to the floor and someone snapped a picture. I'm really sad to hear the news and I send my deepest condolences to family and friends alike. Those of us that knew Russ were definetly blessed and I will miss him!!!

This note is from the former Norma Inman Schreiner, who is a childhood friend of Rusty's Julie PS If you have not seen the pics, on-line memorial info, song video, etc. on my Facebook page, contact me and check them out. I am adding new pictures all the time & will scan in more this week. --------------------------------- All: Those planning the memorial service for Rusty would like to put together a book of photos and stories about his life and times. They are asking that his friends send to them any photos and stories you would like to share. If you are like me, the problem is going to be determining which Rusty stories to tell. (Each person may submit up to 2 pages of info) The deadline for submitting these items is February 5, 2010. You can either email or send via regular mail. I would suggest that you not send your only copy of a photo if submitting via regular mail. Make a copy and send it. Please send these items to Guich Koock. Following is his contact information: EMAIL: guichntex@yahoo.com ADDRESS: Guich Koock 1202 Raton Ave. La Junta, Colorado 81050 Plans are continuing for the memorial service and once the date and place are set I shall let you know. Please forward this email to others who may want to participate.

Once I took a photo of Rusty riding off into the sunset on a YO Ranch trail ride.....the Mountain Sun paper published it. Very romantic...as was his view of life. He played songs for my dad at my house one spring...a birthday gift. He painted Jimmie Rodgers for our September event. Ah....so many ways to remember Rusty. Oh...he also gave me a tour of his storage in Harper and fixed me a hat for my Belle Starr presentation.....yep. A guy who lives in the heart of Texas. Kathleen in Kerrville

I have known Russ since I was about 7 years old when we moved to Hunt, TX. We moved to Fredericksburg a few years later and then to Santa Fe, NM...we always seemed to run into Russ no matter where we lived! He was my parents friend and I remember him coming over and playing the guitar and I will never forget the time the movie "Wind in the Lion" with Sean Connery played at the theatre in Fredericksburg! Russ had a small part in it and we all had to go see it together! Fun times! I will miss him...I do have a copy of "Ray Miller's Texas" when Russ was on it. I just copied it to DVD about 1 year ago.....I will treasure it!

They broke the mold before they made Rusty. He introduced me to some of the dearest friends in my life. For that, and his ever lively presence, I will always be grateful. He will be missed because of his friendship and abstract approach to life.

I extend to all of Russ's family my deepest sympathy over your loss. He was a super-friend back in the old Reagan High School days of the early 60's and a great artist and guitar player. A "true Texan to the core!" He even came up to Concan just a few summers ago to play for our family, and grandkids. He will be truly missed. Don Robinson

My dear friend Russ was a true artist--- an inspiration and enigma at the same time. I will cherish my memories of Heights Blvd, surfing, and hanging out with him. He finally found peace.
