
Mattie M. Shaw, 88, passed away on June 18, 2012 at a Kerrville hospital. She was born on March 28, 1924 in Sanford, Florida to Roy G Stanton and Bessie (Goodlae) Stanton. She served in the Army-Air Corp during World War II (1944-1951). Mattie married Johnnie Carl Shaw in 1972, they were both hired to teach for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Mattie taught elementary on the Navajo Reservation in Dilcon, Az and after two years they were transferred to Gambell, AK on the St. Lawrence Island. After, three years at Gambell, they were then transferred to Grayling, AK to teach elementary to the Holikachuck Indians (Athabascans). Mattie and Johnnie spent three years at the Grayling school then returned to the lower forty eight, to settle for a time in Goehner, NE. She received a master's degree in anthropology from Concordia College in Seward, NE. Mattie was a member of the Notre Dame Catholic Church, Kerrville. She was a life member of the Kerrville VFW Post 1480, were Johnnie served as the chapel. Mattie had a love of collecting coins, rocks and arrow heads. She had a passion for softball and played on a team in her younger years. Mattie will be remembered a loving mother, grandmother, dedicated teacher and dear friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Johnny and Robert Stanton; husband Johnnie Carl Shaw.
Mattie is survived by her loving children, Paul Shaw and Troy Stanton-Shaw; grandson, Marshall Stanton-Shaw. She will be loved and missed by many other family members and dear friends.
Visitation will be held at 10am- 6pm, Friday, June 22, 2012 at Wright's Funeral Parlor with a Rosary following at 6pm.
A Burial Mass will be conducted at 9:30am, Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church, Kerrville with Pastor Michael Boulette officiating the services. The interment will follow with full military honors at the Turtle Creek Cemetery.
